The passage from 1 Samuel recounts how God summons Saul \u201cto govern the LORD\u2019s people Israel.\u201d It is not surprising that God commissions Samuel to anoint Saul for God\u2019s service because Saul \u201cwas a handsome young man\u201d who \u201cstood head and shoulders above the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story of the call of Levi in today\u2019s gospel, however, is unexpected because Levi was a tax collector employed by the Roman Empire that occupied Palestine during Jesus\u2019 life and ministry. As an employee of an oppressive power, Levi was despised by the Israelites; in fact, the late Passionist scripture scholar, Carroll Stuhlmueller, wrote that Levi was considered such an outsider that he could not even sit at the same table with devout Jews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-black-color has-palette-color-38-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1\" style=\"grid-template-columns:46% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Jesus-and-Levi-sq.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10448 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Jesus-and-Levi-sq.jpg 400w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Jesus-and-Levi-sq-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Jesus-and-Levi-sq-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, why did Jesus call Levi? The gospel suggests that sometimes God calls people who might seem woefully ill-suited to do God\u2019s work because God sees goodness and gifts in them that we, and perhaps even they, do not see. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even more perplexing, why did Levi respond to Jesus\u2019 call without a second\u2019s hesitation? He didn\u2019t ask Jesus who he was, why he should follow him, or where Jesus would take him; he simply \u201cgot up and followed Jesus.\u201d Moreover, there is no hint that Levi, who was fully occupied and seemingly settled in his life, was waiting to be called or even wanting to be called. Perhaps that means that God\u2019s call comes on God\u2019s time and according to God\u2019s plans and purposes, not always when it is convenient for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Levi, when we answer a call, we never know where it will take us, what it might ask of us, or how it will change us. But we eventually discover that living our callings as fully and faithfully as possible, no matter how challenging they may be, is the key to happiness and fullness of life, because through our callings our lives are taken up into\u2014and contribute to\u2014God\u2019s ongoing story of creative and compassionate love.
