The article concluded with an implied question, \u201cWhy is it that we have to wait until the end of our lives before we start learning some of life\u2019s most important lessons?\u201d&nbsp; In reading this story, I was left with a feeling of trying to fill a deep emptiness.&nbsp; For so many people who live their lives incompletely, their last chapters are about trying to tie loose ends together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I feel that today\u2019s readings left me with a similar feeling of incompleteness and a void in the life of King David.&nbsp; We hear of David\u2019s final days and of his final request.&nbsp; Many of us have final requests before we say our last goodbyes.&nbsp;&nbsp; Even St. Paul of the Cross spoke some of his most profound words from his deathbed.&nbsp; But, of course, final requests lose their force as years go by.&nbsp; David, as hard as he tried to make his final wishes a blessing for Israel, are ultimately lost in a void.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-31-color has-palette-color-38-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I see this incompleteness in today\u2019s Gospel as I try to make sense of the gift Jesus gives to the disciples, and the message the disciples go out to preach.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Calling-of-the-Apostles.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3236 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Calling-of-the-Apostles.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Calling-of-the-Apostles-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus gives them this remarkable authority to cast out unclean spirits.\u00a0 But Mark says that they went off and preached repentance. I would want to ask the disciples, \u201cWhy are you preaching repentance when you have just received the authority to cast out demons?\u201d\u00a0 Notice that in spite of all the instructions Jesus gives them, he doesn\u2019t tell them what message to preach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any Hollywood scriptwriter would show them walking down the middle of Main Street, casting out demons right and left. The townsfolk would come out to see what is taking place, and would be filled with amazement. If truth be told, no one is going to show up when you start by preaching repentance. Did the disciples not follow instructions?&nbsp; Were they too timid to use this gift or power?&nbsp; Did they not trust the gift of authority or did they believe that this authority had some limitations?&nbsp; What if the real gift Jesus gave them was the gift of repentance and not the authority to create a spectacle?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sadly, our definition of repentance falls short of the word in Greek.\u00a0 The Greek word is <em>metanoia<\/em>, which means to change the way a person thinks and understands.\u00a0 It has nothing to do with feeling badly or living with regrets.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-c86d385\" data-block-id=\"c86d385\"><style>.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-23, #216368) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">The disciples, in preaching repentance, are asking people to change the way they are thinking.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That wouldn\u2019t be possible if they were going around performing spectacular demonstrations of power.\u00a0 <em>Metanoia<\/em> is not a demand to fix oneself; it is an invitation <em>to admit that the way we have been seeing the world is not enough<\/em>.
