It is about time to blow the lid off, so the Catholic Church may again become the dominant social dynamic force.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite decades of proclamations, encyclicals, and homilies by church leaders, the impact of Catholic Social Doctrine has had a difficult time awakening people in the pews. Perhaps, as Maurin said, it has been ignored or sealed in our hermetic psyches as not applicable to daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This moment in U.S. history may be when we stop sitting on our dynamite. A pope and the three active American cardinals, as well as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, have condemn the treatment of refugees and immigrants, the archbishop of the diocese of the Armed Forces proclaimed soldiers and sailors may disobey an immoral order, the Pope condemned the invasion of another country by the United States, 100 clergy are arrested in Minnesota while protesting the actions of ICE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-c86d385\" data-block-id=\"c86d385\"><style>.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-17, #A07400) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">Something is radically changing. The lid on the church\u2019s powerful social teachings, rooted in the commands of Jesus, is being blown off.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s Gospel tells the story of a political flashpoint not unlike today. A prophet spoke up. It cost him his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little context is helpful. John called out Herod for marrying his brother\u2019s wife in a culture where marriage was for building and consolidating dynasties and alliances among the elite. Herod\u2019s first marriage cemented a tie with one of the great kingdoms of the Near East, Nabatea. When the king married a second time, his first wife, the Nabatean princess fled, militarily exposing Jews in Herod\u2019s kingdom. But it also set up a rift between Herod and his many Jewish subjects. The Jews considered their rulers legitimate only if they recognized Jewish law, which Herod did not do in marrying his brother\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophet John shamed Herod publicly, offending Herod\u2019s vindictive second wife. John risked his life by speaking against evil. Jesus followed John\u2019s pattern by speaking against authorities. Like John, he was arrested, put in prison, executed, and buried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Passionist priest reminded me recently that the Jewish mob, incited by their frightened faith leaders, yelled, \u201cCrucify him! Crucify him!\u201d They may well have believed that killing Jesus on a tree would somehow be good for all Jews. Those at the king\u2019s birthday party might have cheered the beheading of the great prophet, perhaps seeking Herod\u2019s favor for their personal gain. Sound familiar? In both cases, people failed to take public stands against evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our day, evil seems to be ascending. The innocent are being terrorized, put in prison, and killed. Might makes right is the dominant moral code, not the words of Jesus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-5-background-color has-background\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Holding-Hands-Sunset.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3331 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Holding-Hands-Sunset.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Holding-Hands-Sunset-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One church leader in New Hampshire said recently that if we take our faith seriously during this moment in history, we may well expect martyrdom. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He even encouraged his priests to ensure their wills were in order.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will we be like the birthday party-goers who never spoke against Herod? Will be part of the mob that yelled \u201cCrucify him! Crucify him!\u201d thinking an evil act will, in some distorted way, lead to something good?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is time for prayer. Time to listen to the Spirit at work in us. Then, following our prayer, to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words of today\u2019s psalm are reassuring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>God\u2019s way is unerring;<\/em><br><em>The promise of the Lord is fire-tried;<\/em><br><em>He is a shield to all who take refuge in him<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We must use the church\u2019s dynamite, God\u2019s way, to resist evil. That\u2019s why God gave it to us.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something is radically changing.
