Today in Matthew\u2019s Gospel He is calling us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. For generations \u201cthe salt of the earth\u201d has been a widely recognized compliment.&nbsp; Our most revered heroes are often referred to as \u201cshining lights\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may take the inexpensive seasoning that sits on our tables for granted, but people in Jesus\u2019s time had a greater appreciation of its value and its symbolism.&nbsp; It was necessary to make bland foods edible and to preserve meats. Because of this it came to symbolize purity, joy, happiness and the preservation of life. Hebrews made a \u201ccovenant of salt\u201d with God, showing their trust in Him by sprinkling salt on their offerings. Salt was used as barter along the ancient trade routes and some cultures utilized salt as currency. (The word <em>salary<\/em> comes from the Latin word for salt.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salt and light are both transformative substances. \u00a0As Christians we are called to transform our world, to make it better.\u00a0 My \u201cpinch of salt\u201d could make a difference to someone in a financial, personal or spiritual crisis. With enough salt whole neighborhoods or even nations might be transformed! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-c86d385\" data-block-id=\"c86d385\"><style>.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-13, #AD5309) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">The light from my candle could help someone find their way through a personal challenge. With enough candles we could light up the world!<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus reminds that when salt becomes insipid it is useless. Perhaps he is telling us that faith without works is meaningless.&nbsp; Today\u2019s reading from Isaiah suggests where we might spread our salt \u2013 to the hungry, the oppressed and the homeless.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jesus reminds that when salt becomes insipid it is useless.
