Our lives are driven by multiple desires, and we desire whatever we think will complete us, quiet our hungry, restless hearts, and draw us more fully to life. This is why James writes: \u201cNo one experiencing temptation should say, \u2018I am being tempted by God,\u2019\u201d for God \u201ctempts no one.\u201d On the contrary, \u201ceach person is tempted when lured and enticed by their desires,\u201d an unsettling statement that reminds us that the things that lead us astray are not tossed into our lives by a trickster God who delights in tripping us up; rather, it\u2019s our own desires that bedevil us, our wayward loves that destroy us. As James starkly warns: \u201cThen desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches maturity, it gives birth to death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sin is born from misguided desires that spring from misplaced loves. This doesn\u2019t mean that the things we love are bad, but that we often love good things in the wrong way by giving them a higher place in our lives than they deserve. Our goal is to \u201creceive the crown of life\u201d that comes from being with God and the saints in heaven; however, sin \u201cgives birth to death\u201d precisely because it is behavior that gradually\u2014one act after another\u2014turns us away from God, sometimes so much so that we eventually become utterly unmindful of God, living as if God didn\u2019t even exist. That\u2019s about as far from the \u201ccrown of life\u201d that we can possibly be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell me what you love, and I\u2019ll tell you what will become of you.\u201d It\u2019s all really pretty simple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 45%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we love God most of all, doing our best to make God the preeminent desire of our hearts, far from giving \u201cbirth to death,\u201d love will lead us to the joy and life, abundance and liberation, intimacy and communion for which God created us in the first place.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AA-Contemplative-Man.jpg\" alt=\"A young man with short curly hair and a trimmed beard is shown in profile, gazing thoughtfully into the distance.
