I would \u201cgive up\u201d candy for Lent but not give it away! Instead of devouring my usual supply, I would put it in that empty can and save it for an Easter feast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-palette-color-38-background-color has-background is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-995f960e wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03.05.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03.05.png 940w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03.05-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03.05-768x644.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-31-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(15.197px, 0.95rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.61), 23px);\">This practice provided a great source of motivation for me, while also providing an occasion for sin for my siblings who often raided my tin and stole from my precious supply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I look back on those days with happiness but sometimes wonder if and how my practice of fasting has evolved. I think many of us continue our adult faith journey with our childhood practices in our backpack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the Church has failed to evolve in its practice! We are considered to be in adherence of Lenten Fridays when we abstain from our beef burger and switch to salmon or lobster instead \u2013 not exactly a sacrifice for those of us who enjoy eating fish.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So how do I think of fasting today? I view fasting as a pilgrimage! A pilgrimage is essentially a process of dislocation where the destination, the shrine, the holy place, is actually secondary. What is important is the journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No pilgrimage captures this as well as the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. The richness is found in the reflection and the conversations with fellow travelers. And these pilgrimages are not marathons. We can pause for a break, stop for a day, even take a small detour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the physical leaving of ones\u2019 regular places of work and living that allows for the experience of new ideas, people, and experiences which in turn allow for the Spirit to touch our hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-5dd8776\" data-block-id=\"5dd8776\"><style>.stk-5dd8776 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-2, #7b272c) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-5dd8776 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">Fasting is simply another way of giving the Spirit access to our hearts. <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have cast off the childish notion of fasting as a task to accomplish. My question now is &#8211; what activity or thing can I abstain from that is important enough to me so that when I am drawn to it and consciously abstain from it, my thoughts are redirected to God. This is vitally important! When we consciously satiate ourselves with the physical, there is a diminished space for the Divine presence in our lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, I now fast from fasting! I no longer allow myself to become preoccupied with the \u201cwhat\u201d or the fidelity to the discipline \u2013 even a breaking of the fast can become a positive choice if it shifts my focus back to God and to the presence of the Spirit\u2019s work in my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I invite you to choose an activity or a commodity that you usually enjoy and for these forty days, set it aside.
