At the end of our first reading from Leviticus, it says, \u201cLove your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the preceding verses, we are told what <em>not<\/em> to do in order to obey the commandment to love: \u201cYou shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another\u2026You shall not defraud\u2026You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind\u2026You shall not act dishonestly in rendering judgment\u2026You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our Gospel reading, Jesus presents an image of the last judgment. The people are separated into groups. One group enters the kingdom, and one group does not. On what basis were they separated? They were separated according to how they treated \u201cthese least ones.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells us what we <em>are<\/em> to do: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-b521bb0\" data-block-id=\"b521bb0\"><style>.stk-b521bb0 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-22, #194A4E) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-b521bb0 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, visit the sick and those in prison. <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By mentioning the \u201cleast of these,\u201d Jesus challenges us to expand our understanding about who is the neighbor we are called to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are some very basic texts. And yet, they still present a challenge. The season of Lent is not meant to throw us into despair of never meeting the standards to which we are called. It is meant to call us to repentance and to turn to God to give us what we need to follow God\u2019s commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-c86d385\" data-block-id=\"c86d385\"><style>.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-23, #216368) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">May we accept God\u2019s love and mercy in Jesus Christ and share that love and mercy with all our \u201cneighbors.\u201d<\/p><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cLove your neighbor as yourself.
