We beg and plead with God and seemingly get no answer. Indeed, sometimes someone else\u2019s prayers seem to be answered while ours go unheeded. We can heap guilt upon ourselves, assuming it\u2019s our fault. Perhaps we\u2019re asking in the \u201cwrong\u201d way, or perhaps our faith is deficient. Or we get angry because we assume the fault is God\u2019s. How can we please this capricious God who doles out favors so sparingly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One distinction to note: What is it that Jesus promises? He says, \u201c\u2026how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him?\u201d Ah, that changes things. We are not promised that if we ask for a new job, we will receive a new job, or if we ask for physical healing, we will receive physical healing. Instead, Jesus promises that if we ask for anything, we will receive \u201cgood things\u201d. In other words, we will receive what we <em>need<\/em>, not necessarily what we <em>want. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-c86d385\" data-block-id=\"c86d385\"><style>.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-2, #7b272c) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">What we request may or may not be good for us, and God knows the difference. <em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When my dad was dying, despite our multitude of prayers (from 10 kids!) we did not receive physical healing. Instead, we received reconciliation of divisions within our family that Dad was able to witness before he died. We received the blessing of having most of the family gathered with him, praying and singing as he went to God. We received such a strong witness to spirituality and faith that even non-practicing family members were touched. Dad\u2019s death was truly sacred. God doesn\u2019t often give physical healing, but God always heals. God doesn\u2019t always answer in the ways we want, but God always answers prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells us God wants us to be honest and ask for what we desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-38-background-color has-background\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bench-Flower-Garden.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3218 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bench-Flower-Garden.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Bench-Flower-Garden-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, God knows what\u2019s in my heart even before I speak. Formulating and verbalizing my needs is a valuable exercise for my own sake, not for God\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I must trust the Source of all love to winnow out the chaff and pour out what I truly need underneath it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus\u2019 challenge, then, is to continually be in relationship with God \u2013 asking for what I need, laying bare the depths of my heart and sharing my life. Then comes the hard part &#8211; simultaneously opening myself and learning to listen to God\u2019s answers, so I can be an ever more receptive vessel to what God knows I need to receive. My life will not be free from sadness, tragedy, and loss.
