As it was last Sunday, our Gospel reading is taken from Matthew\u2019s account (Matthew 17:1-9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Transfiguration-sq.jpg\" alt=\"Painting of the Transfiguration of Jesus, showing Christ radiant in white light standing between Moses and Elijah, while three astonished disciples shield their eyes from the brilliance.\" class=\"wp-image-4852\" style=\"width:356px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Transfiguration-sq.jpg 400w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Transfiguration-sq-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Transfiguration-sq-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in Mark\u2019s and Luke\u2019s account, Jesus goes up a mountain with Peter, James and John. Before them He is transfigured \u2013 His face shines \u201clike the sun\u201d and his clothes become \u201cwhite as light.\u201d Appearing on the mountain are Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets. While they are conversing with Jesus, Peter offers to make three tents for them to stay: one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elijah. While Peter is speaking, a cloud overshadows where they are, and a voice from the cloud says, \u201cThis is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.\u201d The disciples become afraid and fall to the ground. In Matthew\u2019s account Jesus touches them and says, \u201cRise, and do not be afraid.\u201d Then He tells them not to mention this to anyone \u201cuntil the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What struck me was the verse that is unique to Matthew\u2019s account: Jesus touches the disciples and says, \u201cRise, and do not be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can we let Jesus touch our hearts this Lent and lift us up? Can we open our hearts and rise up from fear and hate, especially of those we consider \u201cother?\u201d Can we let go of fear and reach out to those in need? Very soon after Jesus and the three disciples come down the mountain, Jesus is asked to drive out an unclean spirit from a young boy (Matthew 17:14-20).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we have been blessed with a \u201cmountaintop experience\u201d of God\u2019s love and presence, we may be tempted to hold on to that experience, or use a lot of energy to try to recapture it once it is gone. But even though Peter James and John got a glimpse of Jesus in His glory, He still had to carry His Cross before the Resurrection. It is the same with us. Maybe the \u201ctransfiguration\u201d to which we are called to open ourselves isn\u2019t so much about living in glory, but in trusting in the love of God for us in Jesus Christ, to be willing, as Abram was in our first reading (Genesis 12:1-4a), to go where God sends us, to carry the crosses that come when we choose to love as Jesus did, and to work to help build up the kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May we open ourselves to transfiguration, and let God use us to help transfigure the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I welcome any questions or comments.
