Then months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No answers. No tidy theology that could make this fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just two parents whose forty years of certainty had shattered in a single sentence, and a priest who was supposed to know what to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I had instead were years of sitting with people\u2014as both a priest and a therapist\u2014who were living in the gap between what they believed and what love demanded of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I\u2019ve learned something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the most sacred thing you can say is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know. Pretending to be someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her hands trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe said there were nights in college when the only thing that stopped him from ending his life was the thought of what it would do to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked at me, devastated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy son stood at the edge, Father\u2026 and I never knew. Because I built a home where his truth was more dangerous than death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat kind of mother does that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Cost of the Closet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been a therapist long enough to know what closets do to people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The depression that looks like laziness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anxiety that looks like distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slow death that happens when you spend years believing the core of who you are is unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have buried young people who couldn\u2019t survive that gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now I was sitting with the mother who had just realized her son almost became one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLiza,\u201d I said quietly, my voice shaking too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou didn\u2019t know because Michael loves you. Maybe it\u2019s about staying when there aren\u2019t any.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Father\u2019s Awakening<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next week Tom came in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He sat down and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLast Thanksgiving my son barely spoke five words. I thought he was tired. Stressed from work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut he wasn\u2019t tired. He was suffocating. My boy was sitting three feet away from me, drowning\u2026 and I was asking him to pass the potatoes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He buried his face in his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat kind of father sits across from his drowning son and doesn\u2019t even see the water?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he said something I will carry to my grave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor forty years I thought my job was to raise my kids to be good Catholics. But I was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My job is to love them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My son doesn\u2019t need my theology. He needs his father.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A New Understanding of God<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked up at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat if God doesn\u2019t make mistakes? What if Michael is exactly who God created him to be? And what if the only mistake here was me thinking I had the right to change that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cross tells me that God loves people we try to change. People who don\u2019t fit our categories. People who shatter every box we build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe God loves my gay son exactly as he made him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not despite who he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because of who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice dropped to almost nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd if I can\u2019t do the same\u2026 then I don\u2019t understand God at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that moment I wasn\u2019t a priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wasn\u2019t a therapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was simply a man watching another man become who God always meant him to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Faith Reborn<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tom and Liza did not lose their faith in those months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What they lost was a version of faith that needed everyone to fit neatly inside its rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A faith that demanded certainty instead of mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A faith that required God to be smaller than love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What emerged instead was quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More Eucharistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day they told me something I still pray over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather, if loving our son brings us closer to the suffering Christ, maybe we are closer to God than we have ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Table of Belonging<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael now lives three states away. Every few months he comes home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week Liza called me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather, you need to know something. This Sunday we went to Mass together. The three of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I could hear her smiling through the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMichael sat between us. Tom on one side. Me on the other. And we went to communion together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For twelve years he had sat in a different pew, pretending not to know them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all those years of hiding, her voice broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather\u2026 my son came home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My son came home, and we brought him to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the Eucharist Means<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sat there with the phone pressed to my ear thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what the Eucharist means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of our messy, broken, beautiful stories meet God\u2019s story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All our fear, doubt, and desperate love meet the God who says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTake. Eat. You belong here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because you\u2019re fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because you fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because love doesn\u2019t ask permission to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Love That Stays<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a retreat last week Tom pulled me aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather, I used to pray every night that God would change my son.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He smiled softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow I thank God every day that my son changed me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My friends, that is suffering love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the love that demands people transform before we accept them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the love that transforms us when we finally stop trying to control who is worthy of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That love may not give you answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it will bring you to the heart of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because between noon and three, love does not explain itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Am\u00e9n.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/details>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s Lenten reflection is from Fr.
