We loved him completely, and he remained present in parish life, even while aware of how some perceived him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he married, and members of the Church we loved\u2014some who even attended the wedding\u2014caused harm, the wound felt irreparable. The pain was not only in what was said and done, but in the loss of a community that had once felt like home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture gives language for this kind of grief: \u201cIt is not an enemy who taunts me\u2026 but it is you, my companion\u201d (Psalm 55:12\u201313, NLT).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the suffering clarified something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While certain relationships fell away and revealed themselves as conditional, the deeper loss was the church community as a whole &#8211; the place that had shaped our faith and sense of belonging. In that unraveling, we also discovered a steadier truth: family is not negotiable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Ruth standing beside Naomi, saying, \u201cWhere you go, I will go\u201d (Ruth 1:16, NLT), we chose to remain with my brother without shame or hesitation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was meant to fracture us instead refined us.
