In John\u2019s version of the miracle story, three things stand out. First, Jesus\u2019 foremost concern is that the crowd is fed. This gospel story says nothing about Jesus teaching or preaching to the crowd; rather, he is entirely focused on feeding them, which suggests that their physical well-being matters to Jesus. When people are hungry, teaching can wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, we know this miracle story so well that we can easily overlook that after he multiplied the \u201cfive barley loaves and two fish,\u201d rather than asking his disciples to distribute the food to the crowd, Jesus feeds them himself, going to each person, one after another, offering them \u201cas much of the fish as they wanted.\u201d For Jesus, the miracle would have been incomplete, stalled and unfinished, if he had stopped with the act of multiplication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-6-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:47% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Loaves-and-Fishes-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3412 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Loaves-and-Fishes-2.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Loaves-and-Fishes-2-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miracle is fulfilled only when he goes deep into the crowd to feed every man, woman, and child himself, giving each of them, even if only for a moment, not only something to eat, but his absolute attention. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not one of them was passed over, not one of them was overlooked. That\u2019s the world the way God wants it to be, a world where no human being is bypassed or overlooked; a world where no one is left wanting because, like the people on the mountainside in Galilee that day, everyone \u201chad had their fill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do we bring that kind of world into being, a world that Jesus called \u201cthe reign of God\u201d? This brings us to the third point. Jesus could multiply the loaves and the fishes only because a young boy shared what he had. He gave Jesus something to work with and, as a result, thousands of people had \u201cmore than they could eat.\u201d It\u2019s no different for us. Like the young boy, Jesus works with whatever we have to offer\u2014an act of generosity, a word of encouragement, a kind gesture\u2014making more of whatever we give him than we can possibly imagine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-c86d385\" data-block-id=\"c86d385\"><style>.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-2, #7b272c) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.5em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">Miracles?
