rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Peter 5:5b-14<br>Mark 16:15-20<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflexi\u00f3n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m lucky. I was assigned the twenty-fifth day of each month, so writing these reflections should be a piece of cake! After all, pondering Christmas Day <em>(December 25)<\/em>, the Conversion of St. Paul <em>(January 25)<\/em>, the Annunciation <em>(March 25)<\/em>, and St. James the Apostle <em>(July 25)<\/em> is only the beginning. Some years we celebrate Thanksgiving on the 25<sup>o<\/sup> <em>(November)<\/em> or Ash Wednesday <em>(February)<\/em> on that day. Today we have St. Mark, Evangelist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. Mark, whose Gospel is the earliest of the four evangelists, is symbolized by the <strong><em>lion<\/em><\/strong> (Matthew, Luke and John depicted as angel, ox and eagle, respectively) mirroring <strong>courage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We imagine the courageous person as one possessing valor or guts, but the word actually comes from the Latin, <em>cor<\/em> (heart) and <em>agere<\/em> (to act); so, to be courageous means to have the strength of \u201cacting from the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years ago, while directing a retreat for college students, I remember asking these salt-of-the-earth, good young people what the most important attribute or virtue might be in their choices of friendship. Nearly all of them said they look for <em>integrity<\/em> o <em>authenticity<\/em> in others\u2026 that people be true to their <strong>hearts<\/strong>, not so much their thoughts or abstract ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our liturgical readings during these days of basking in the shadow of Eastertide, we keep hearing <em>(especially from the Acts of the Apostles)<\/em> those stories about the early followers of Jesus being transformed, that resurrection wasn\u2019t just something that happened to Jesus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-5-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:54% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Holding-Hands-Sunset.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3331 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Holding-Hands-Sunset.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Holding-Hands-Sunset-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, all those who shared in Baptism were also to immerse themselves into the Paschal Mystery.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were converted, or transformed, from being a scattered, scrappy group of frightened and suspicious independents, into being suddenly galvanized into a believing and zealous faith community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our first reading, St. Peter thunders, \u201cClothe yourselves in heartfelt humility\u201d! Perhaps one of the reasons many young people today are drifting away from the structures of participation \u2014 in politics and government and church \u2014 could be a call for all of us to be more authentic or genuine, to act from the heart.
