In a world populated by millions of self-interested people, rules and regulations are necessary for the welfare and safety of us all. Sometimes, however, they are so numerous and detailed that they become burdensome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In today\u2019s Gospel, Jesus manages to address all of these needs with one rule.&nbsp; <em>\u201cThis is my commandment: love one another as I love you.\u201d<\/em> (John 15: 12) Jesus is speaking of <em>agape love<\/em> \u2013 that selfless, unconditional love that prioritizes the well-being of others. In 1 Corinthians, Paul calls it the greatest of the virtues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one commandment addresses the intent of all the original ten.&nbsp; Anyone who truly embraces it would naturally refrain from lying, deceiving, cheating, harming or injuring others. If everyone embraced it, imagine how many of society\u2019s rules and laws would be unnecessary!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I find this one commandment, however, more difficult to follow than any of the original ten. It requires a reordering of my ideas and activities, from self-directed to other-directed. I might be able to do this for my friends and family, since they are generally a decent lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-39-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\">But, as Jesus pointed out, <em>\u201cIf you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?\u201d<\/em> -Matthew 5:47-48<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mountain-Lake.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3454 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mountain-Lake.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mountain-Lake-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can I develop this <em>agape<\/em> toward those outside my inner circle, especially when many of them appear unappealing, unpleasant or hostile? As I ruminated on this question, I came across this post on a friend\u2019s Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(15.747px, 0.984rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.645), 24px);\"><em>There\u2019s a term I can\u2019t remember that means \u201cto realize every random person is a fully formed person and not just someone who exists when you\u2019re near them.\u201d \u2026 I remember driving around and seeing the other people in their cars behind the glass. \u2026 I had a hard time thinking of every single random person that I passed as a complete human with their own full story.\u00a0 But I stopped and literally looked around and saw all the people milling about. So many people. So many thoughts and stories that I would never know.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe this is a good place to start. The stranger who is hungry, unhoused, unwell or otherwise troubled is more than just a passing moment in my life.
