has-text-color\">Celebrating Kindness, Justice, and Peace<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It&#8217;s July 4<\/strong><strong><sup>o<\/sup><\/strong><strong>! <\/strong>&nbsp;For us citizens of the U.S.A., it\u2019s a special celebration of the 250<sup>o<\/sup> anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.&nbsp; Together, we reflect on and celebrate the dynamics of our nation\u2019s history.&nbsp; And the liturgical Scripture selections for \u201cordinary time\u201d, the Saturday of the 13<sup>o<\/sup> week of the year, offer us reason to pause and reflect deeply on our faith as it impacts the practicalities of life today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reading from the prophet Amos flows from his reputation as a prophet of both doom and hope.&nbsp; Israel had been unfaithful to its covenant with God; they had been punished \u2013 thus Amos speaks of Israel\u2019s restoration:&nbsp; rebuilding the ruins, the \u201cbasics\u201d of life restored, a sense of being \u201chome\u201d \u2026 a new age, a fertile earth, basic needs met \u2013 flowing from an abundance of God\u2019s love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew\u2019s Gospel pictures the disciples of John the Baptist questioning Jesus about the demands of fasting as disciples.\u00a0 Jesus uses a variety of familiar images \u2013 a wedding celebration, patching a piece of old fabric, the care of new wine \u2013 to help them understand that, in Him, God is sharing a new experience of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s love is fresh, new, abundant; God is forgiving, generous, loving.\u00a0 Jesus challenges them to \u201cthink outside the box\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we are invited to faithfully embrace the opportunities and challenges of life.&nbsp; Our world is full of war and violence, of social unrest and heartfelt needs of all types.&nbsp; This calls for a change of attitude for all we \u201ccitizens of our common home\u201d.&nbsp; In spite of the contemporary \u201cprophets\u201d of doom and gloom who fan fear with selfishness and mistrust, we are heartily invited to have faith in Jesus, to \u201cthink outside the box\u201d and see the bigger \/ global picture, to accept and share God\u2019s generous life and love so powerfully revealed in Jesus\u2019 suffering and death on the Cross.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In keeping with the spirit of July 4<sup>o<\/sup>, Psalm 85 speaks of God\u2019s gifts of peace, kindness, truth, justice, salvation \u2013 the needed message of hope and encouragement for us all as fellow citizens of the world.&nbsp; Encouraged by the prophet Amos, the poetic words of the Psalmist, and words and deeds of Jesus Himself, may we all come to experience
