Today\u2019s gospel memorably illustrates that Jesus was no rigorist, no joyless zealot of rigidity, when it came to interpreting the laws of his own Jewish faith. Jesus respected the laws of his religion because they provided a way to live that was pleasing to God; however, he also knew there were times when certain laws should be set aside for the sake of something more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this gospel story, Jesus and his disciples are walking through a field of grain on the sabbath. The disciples are hungry, so they help themselves to some of the grain, eating it as they walk along with Jesus. Unfortunately, some Pharisees who observed this disrupt Jesus\u2019 peaceful sabbath stroll by commenting, \u201cSee, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.\u201d Ironically, they really do not <em>see<\/em> at all. They are so focused on honoring a law\u2014and perhaps finding fault with Jesus\u2014that they fail to see what they need to see: human beings in need. Jesus doesn\u2019t tell them that sabbath laws don\u2019t matter, much less that they can be cavalierly ignored. But he does insist that there are times when they ought to give way for the sake of human well-being. The purpose of any law is to serve the common good by creating the conditions in which all members of a society (or religion) can live well together and flourish. But nobody can flourish when they are hungry or when any other basic human needs cannot be met, which is why Jesus says his disciples did the right thing in breaking that sabbath law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-995f960e wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI desire mercy, not sacrifice,\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus confirms at the end of today\u2019s gospel. If we take those words to heart, letting them inform our attitudes and actions, we won\u2019t be so quick to judge and to find fault. That\u2019s because we will know that although all laws matter, none matter more than the law of love and whatever love might ask of us on any given day, including the sabbath.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jesus doesn\u2019t tell them that sabbath laws don\u2019t matter, much less that they can be cavalierly ignored.
