Elizabeth A. Johnson\u2019s book, \u201c<strong>Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love<\/strong>\u201d is not an easy read. It challenged my understanding of evolution, science and the world around me. Yet, it also affected me deeply and unexpectedly, compelling me to look at the world in a new way.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can no longer look out my window and see a stagnant world. Now I see a living, dynamic, evolving cosmos which flows freely from a Loving God who embraces my heart. Reading \u201cAsk the Beasts\u201d affirmed in me the core message of Pope Francis\u2019 <em>Laudato Si'<\/em>: we are all connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>For the Heart: Finding Wonder in Our Connectedness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To sweeten the journey through Johnson\u2018s thorough analysis of Darwin\u2019s work in \u201cAsk the Beasts\u201d, I highly recommend as a companion book, \u201c<strong>Braiding Sweetgrass<\/strong>\u201d by Robin Wall Kimmerer. \u201cBraiding Sweetgrass\u201d blends the solidly, intellectual knowledge shared in \u201cAsk the Beasts\u201d and steeps it in the beauty and poetry of Native American indigenous wisdom. Where \u201cAsk the Beasts\u201d spoke to my mind, \u201cBraiding Sweetgrass\u201d spoke to my heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>For the Soul: A Story of Love, Forgiveness and Belonging<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding soul to my journey is a third and final book, \u201c<strong>The Parchment of Leaves<\/strong>\u201d by Silas House. I recommend reading this novel, along with the two others, to ground oneself in the human.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This book describes forgiveness and love in the life of an Appalachian indigenous woman. \u201cThe Parchment of Leaves\u201d reminded me of our shared need to flourish as humans, while realizing the connection we have with the world around us.
