Alphonsus pictured the confessor as a physician of souls, someone whose task was neither to interrogate nor to overlook, but to heal. He wrote against confessors who used the sacrament to shame rather than restore, insisting that the law exists to serve a person&#8217;s growth toward God, not to crush them beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few of us will ever sit in a confessional and hear another person&#8217;s sins. But all of us are asked, again and again, to be listeners and guides for someone else: a spouse, a friend, a coworker, a struggling adult child. Alphonsus&#8217;s posture applies just as much to us as it did to his priests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do we tell the people we love what they need to hear, in a way that can actually be received, or do we soften the truth into something useless, or deliver it so bluntly it can&#8217;t be heard at all?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today&#8217;s readings show what happens when that balance is lost. Jeremiah stands before priests and princes who cannot accept his warning about the Temple&#8217;s fate; only Ahikam&#8217;s protection saves him. Herod, meanwhile, knows executing John the Baptist is wrong (Scripture tells us he feared and even liked hearing him), yet kills him anyway, more afraid of losing face before his guests than of doing what&#8217;s right. In both scenes, truth is treated not as an invitation to conversion but as a threat, and the one who speaks it pays the price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alphonsus never asked the Church to lower its standards, only to remember why it holds them: not to condemn, but to heal. That is our work too, whenever someone we love needs an honest, healing word. Where in our own life is someone waiting for exactly that, spoken not with harshness, and not with silence, but with real tenderness?
