I visited with young people while they were \u201clocked up\u201d in the Youth Home, in adult prisons after sentencing, and after they were released. Many of them suffered the burdens that St. Paul lists in todays\u2019 second reading. They had lived with \u201canguish\u201d and \u201cdistress\u201d in homes riddled with violence or neglect, or they were abused while in detention. Some experienced \u201cpersecution\u201d for the color of their skin or their social status as they moved out into the wider world. And some endured \u201cfamine\u201d and \u201cnakedness\u201d because they were born into poverty. And many of the young men, seeking to escape the violence in their neighborhood, joined the military. And sadly, some of them found \u201cperil\u201d and the \u201csword\u201d in a foreign land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My heart went out to them, and I wanted to relieve their burdens. I came to believe that the best message I could share with them was that God loved them. We sometimes leave God, but God does not leave us. God\u2019s love is unconditional and freely given as expressed in today\u2019s first reading from Isaiah:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>All you who are thirsty,<br>come to the water!<br>You who have no money,<br>come, receive grain and eat;<br>Come, without paying and without cost,<br>drink wine and milk!\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<cite><em>&#8211;<\/em>Isaiah 55: 1<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do we experience this love when we are suffering?\u00a0 Is this unconditional love \u201ctoo good to be true\u201d? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-6-background-color has-background\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Contemplative-Girl.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11736 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Contemplative-Girl.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Contemplative-Girl-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I told my young friends that \u201cGod works through people\u201d. God\u2019s love is to be found in the loving relationships we have with each other.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In truth, I would not have had the courage to go to the Youth Home every day, if not for the support of the members of the Team for Justice, a prison ministry community to which I belonged. The woman religious (Sisters), mentored me, prayed with me and for me, and helped me to find and use my gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christian communities come in all sizes, from the Board of Directors at one of our Passionist retreat centers, to the thousands that Jesus ministered to in today\u2019s Gospel. It is in these communities that we encounter and hold onto the love of God in Jesus. We hear the Word of God. We are healed of the things that hold us back, and we are nourished for the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where, when, or how have you experienced the love of God in Jesus in community?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How has Christian community challenged and supported you to find and use your talents and spiritual gifts for the common good?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We hear the Word of God.
