In our first reading, St. Paul doesn\u2019t compromise, thundering to the Thessalonians, \u201cDo not be shaken out of your minds suddenly\u2026 Let no one deceive you in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Jesus often seems more patient with the sins of cheating <em>(tax collectors)<\/em>, or stubbornness, even prostitution and adultery \u2014 than with the sin of hypocrisy. The word, hypocrite, literally means <em>(from the Greek theater<\/em>) &#8220;stage actor, or pretender,\u201d and several times in the Gospels Jesus castigates the Pharisees for being hypocrites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a time of global deception and pervasive lying, scams, misinformation, misleading advertising, and so on. Some call it \u201cfake news,\u201d and it is toxic for a society\u2019s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do we recapture the virtue of integrity, i.e., \u201cwholeness\u201d or holiness?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, when I catch myself exaggerating or \u201cstretching the truth\u201d to make a point or emphasize something important, I need to learn a pattern of recognition, then immediately correct myself. Secondly, I need to speak truth to power on a regular basis. In Jesus\u2019 trial before Annas the high priest, the temple guard strikes Jesus. Instead of retaliating, Jesus challenges the guard logically and morally on the truthfulness of his words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name-calling, ridicule, sarcasm\u2026 and other playground elementary school forms of childishly addressing others is unraveling the fabric of our culture. Where will it end?
