Jesus does not argue with it or let it control the moment. He simply commands it to leave. The man is thrown down, but Luke tells us he is not harmed. What had taken hold of him is gone, and he is restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are other instances in the Gospels where Jesus casts out demons. Few of us, if any, have ever encountered anything we would call demonic possession, and it is tempting to get lost in theories about what caused the man&#8217;s suffering. However, the Gospel is not interested in diagnosing him. It is interested in what controls us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important message for us today is that we too have our own demons. They do not announce themselves loudly and inhuman as the one in the synagogue did. Instead, they sound like my own thinking. Cynicism that feels like realism. Self-protection that feels like prudence. An old grievance that feels justified\u2026well, just because. Those demons do not cry out. They simply settle into my mind and start talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul does not use the language of possession, but the pattern is the same. He describes the spirit of the world and encourages the Corinthians to set it aside and embrace the Spirit of Christ instead. Paul is realistic about the process. It can be slow: a mind given over, judgment by judgment, to the mind of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is shaping how I see today? Is it my own certainty, the noise around me, or an old hurt I keep rehearsing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversion does not happen all at once. More often it is a single pause before I speak, or a judgment left unspoken a little longer. Small as that is, it is the same freedom. Something that had quietly taken hold of me is gently released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God in heaven, give me the mind of Christ, one thought at a
