I define ethics as a disciplined systematic process of reflection that integrates one\u2019s \u201cbeing\u201d and \u201cdoing\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethics basically asks two questions, each with two parts: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWho am I?\u201d and What should I do (moral decision-making) in light of who I am?; and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWho are we?\u201d and \u201cWhat should we do in light of who we are?\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, ethics was often focused on a personal act-centered or individualized morality. Like ethics, conscience was defined in terms of an individual or personal conscience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conscience is the final practical judgment determining which actions are morally right or wrong; that is, which actions will fulfill a person and meet human needs in a balanced manner. Our American Bishops would add \u201cConscience helps us hear the voice of God\u201d (<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>, para. 1776).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forming a Conscience for Faithful Action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter where we are on our journey with Christ, it is important for us to have a moral consciousness and an ongoing process of conscience formation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Saint John Paul II noted, in his call for global ecological conversion in <em>Centesimus Annus<\/em>, little effort had been made to \u201csafeguard the moral conditions for an authentic human ecology.\u201d In <em>Laudato Si\u2019<\/em>, Pope Francis reminds us that \u201cauthentic human development has a moral character.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The importance of a process which will assist us in making the correct moral decision and aid us in determining the right thing to do for the right reason is clear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would suggest that there are six important sources for formation of conscience that help us answer who we are as we strive to discern the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-a5b4832\" data-block-id=\"a5b4832\"><style>.stk-a5b4832 {margin-bottom:50px !important;}<\/style><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-a5b4832-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-9541a6f\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"9541a6f\"><style>.stk-9541a6f {align-self:flex-start !important;}@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-9541a6f {flex:var(--stk-flex-grow, 1) 1 calc(11.6% - var(--stk-column-gap, 0px) * 1 \/ 2 ) !important;}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-9541a6f-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"has-text-align-center stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-9541a6f-inner-blocks\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-number-box stk-block-number-box stk--has-shape stk-block stk-bd01690\" data-block-id=\"bd01690\"><style>.stk-bd01690 .stk-block-number-box__container{height:60px !important;width:60px !important;background-color:var(--theme-palette-color-23, #216368) !important;}.stk-bd01690 .stk-block-number-box__container:before{background-color:var(--theme-palette-color-23, #216368) !important;}.stk-bd01690 .stk-block-number-box__text{font-size:35px !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-bd01690 .stk-block-number-box__text{font-size:35px !important;}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-block-number-box__container\"><span class=\"stk-block-number-box__text\" role=\"presentation\">1<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-4fb761f\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"4fb761f\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-4fb761f {flex:var(--stk-flex-grow, 1) 1 calc(88.4% - var(--stk-column-gap, 0px) * 1 \/ 2 ) !important;}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-4fb761f-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-4fb761f-inner-blocks\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-jost-font-family\">Sacred Scripture: Genesis 1:27<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;So God created humankind in the divine image, in the image of God they were created; male and female they were created.\u201d [NRSV, adapted]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are created unique and precious.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I like what GK Chesterton wrote in his 1908 philosophical autobiography, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/913003-men-spoke-much-in-my-boyhood-about-restricted-or-ruined\"><em>Orthodoxy<\/em><\/a> (in the chapter &#8220;The Ethics of Elfland&#8221;): \u201cMen spoke much in my boyhood about restricted or ruined men of genius: and it was common to say that many a man was a Great Might-Have-Been. To me it&#8217;s a more solid and startling fact that any man in the street is a Great Might-Not-Have-Been\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this season of creation how might I celebrate who I am? Using the same end-of-life example, a patient would need to consult with primary providers and specialists\u2014such as neurologists, cardiologists, and pulmonologists\u2014to understand the diagnosis and prognosis for future care. It means that our words and actions reflect our true inner feelings and thoughts, without hidden or false motives (Webster\u2019s Dictionary).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Community includes all of our relationships within society\u2014and I would add within all of Creation<strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Pope John Paul II described the common good as \u201cthe sum total of social conditions which allow people to reach their fulfillment.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/2021\/04\/the-common-good-is-a-result\/\">Source<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practical terms, this means people need access to food, clothing, shelter, education, work, and health care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These six sources help us answer the question: \u201cAm I doing what is right?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too often, we rely on one source as the sole standard for morality while excluding the others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, we may say, \u201cProve it to me from the Bible,\u201d or \u201cWhat does the Pope say?\u201d In the search for truth and moral decisions, we need all six sources to discern the morally right thing to do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-09a18fa\"
