About half of them hear “passionate, passionate,” and they look at me like I might break into salsa. And the other half hear “Passion, Passion,” and you can see Mel Gibson’s movie playing behind their eyes: blood, whips and, of course, a lot of Aramaic.

Almost no one pictures what I picture: a table. A table, a few Passionists, a couple of beers, a Manhattan or two for the more refined among us and someone telling a story we have all heard 40 times, and everyone laughing anyway, a little too loud. The way you laugh with people who have seen you at your worst and stuck around.

As Passionists, we are people of the cross and people of joy. And those two have been sharing a table for the last 300 years.

My friends, as we celebrate the feast of our magnificent and slightly eccentric and deeply soulful founder, St. Paul of the Cross, I want to talk about that table and about the strange possibility that sorrow and joy might both have a place at it.

Grief and Joy on the Same Couch

So let me take you to one small moment in my own family. It was the third day after my dad died. My mother and my brother and I were looking through old photographs, remembering my dad. You know what photographs do after someone dies. Before, you look at them and say, “Look how young we were.” And afterwards, you look at them and wish you could step inside just for a minute.

So we were looking at them, talking about him, hurting, and then I said something monumentally stupid. And I honestly can’t remember what it was, which is unfortunate. Apparently, some of my finest work has gone unrecorded.

And my mother and my brother just burst out laughing, tears streaming down their faces. “Oh, Johnny,” they said in that tone, that tone that means, “You are impossible and we love you for it.” We laughed. We cried. And then we laughed again, caught in that mysterious, profoundly human tangle of grief and joy.

Dad was still dead, and nothing had been fixed. And we had not reached some advanced stage of grief where they give you permission to enjoy yourself. But for a moment, inside that terrible, terrible absence, we still could recognize one another. My mom was still my mom. My brother was still my brother, and I was apparently still an idiot.

Death had changed our family, but it had not taken everything. And we were not being disrespectful to Dad. We were being human for him, because Dad was in those photos laughing too. After all, grief and joy were sharing the same couch. They did not cancel each other out. They completed each other.

You know, joy helps us live inside that paradox. A heart can be broken and still be reached by love. And I learned that from my spiritual father, Paul of the Cross.

The Humor and Holiness of Our Founder

St. Paul of the Cross lived a very austere life, and his prayer took him deep into the sufferings of Jesus. And yet, listen to the man who comes out of his letters.

In December 1747, Paul went to look at a possible new home for his community. In writing to Father Fulgentius, he describes the garden like a man in love. He talks about figs and grapes and artichokes and beans and broccoli. Enough, he says, even for the novices. And then he describes the building: “It’s rather like a barn where air comes in everywhere except by the door.”

That is our founder. Eighteenth-century property review: excellent vegetables and questionable walls. And he then jokes about himself and his companions getting thoroughly aired out on that hillside. And in that very same letter, he imagines the place becoming a fire of love for their neighbors.

The drafty building and the fire of love belong to that same letter. The humor and the holiness belong to the same man.

Love That Cares for Real People

There is an even more striking instruction in the testimonies about Paul. If it was ever necessary in order to care for sick brothers, the community was to be ready to pawn or sell its sacred vessels. Yes, the sacred vessels. Our holy founder actually said that.

Think about it. The man who spent his life contemplating a suffering body on a cross wanted real sick bodies cared for, whatever it cost. And Paul called the Passion of Jesus “the greatest and most overwhelming work of God’s love.” Love: that’s what held his attention. And it is love that makes us do what we do as Passionists.

Everyone Has a Place at Our Table

You know, one of the first things that I learned as a Passionist was our tradition of radical hospitality and inclusivity. A tradition of radical hospitality and inclusivity. Everyone has a place at our table. All are welcome and no one is excluded.

And that isn’t just about being nice. It’s the fruit and the heart of our Passionist charism. It is the cross made concrete. The cross is God’s radical welcome: arms stretched wide, embracing the whole world. The cross is God saying, “There is no one I will not embrace. There’s no one I will not embrace.” The cross is God saying, “You are not too much. You are not too broken. And you are not too far gone.”

And you can’t be radically hospitable with a miserable face. Try it. I mean, try it. Invite someone to your table and scowl at them while you serve the soup and see how that goes.

Hospitality is joy made visible: the table set, the chair pulled out and inviting everyone, telling them, “Come on, sit down. You’re family.”

Joyful Disciples

Now, trust me, we are not a congregation of sadists, and we don’t follow one. You know, Jesus did not get in trouble for being gloomy. He got in trouble for eating and drinking with the wrong people. And they called him a glutton and a drunkard. No one calls you that if you’re no fun at parties.

Father Pat here at St. Paul’s reminds us constantly that, as Passionists, we are called to be joyful disciples. Joyful disciples, witnesses of the joy of the Lord. And some mornings, you know, I feel obliged to explain, “I am joyful, Father Pat, but my face is still buffering.”

Entering the Mess With Love

So what would Paul of the Cross do if he were walking around today in the age of AI, political polarization, collective despair and general chaos? How would Paul of the Cross spread the fire of the Passionist charism?

Well, I’m damn sure he wouldn’t draft a committee report or post an angry tweet. He would walk right into the mess. He would sit down next to the person living with complex trauma, the survivor of domestic violence, the one wounded by religion, and he would probably tell a terrible joke just to make them crack a smile.

Because Paul knew the secret: the cross is not an endorsement of human suffering or misery. It is the radical proof that God enters our misery so that we never have to endure it alone.

And as daughters and sons of Paul of the Cross, lay and vowed, all of us stand close to sorrow and stay open to joy.

A Love That Stays

And this is the witness I hope, as Passionists, we offer. We stay when you hurt. We stay when you cry. We stay when you suck, including when it is our turn. We stay when you laugh and then feel guilty for laughing. We stay when you’re angry, difficult or frankly no fun to be around.

We stay when you’re boring. And some of us have sat through decades and decades of chapter meetings, so boring doesn’t really scare us. And we stay through the dull, uneventful days when everyone assumes that you must be better by now. And when you can’t find any hope, we keep a place for you among people who will help you carry the day.

And as Passionists, we never leave, because our founder taught us to be people of love. A love that stays. A love that never gives up. A love that finds its way through the cracks of a broken heart.

A Family Feast

So if anyone asks you this week, “What do Passionists celebrate on the feast of your founder?” and you say, “The cross,” “Isn’t that kind of morbid?” Well, you look them dead in the eye and tell them, “Are you kidding? Are you kidding? Our founder was an Italian, and he took one long look at the single ugliest instrument of torture and execution in the ancient world, wiped his eyes and said, ‘This isn’t a tragedy, folks. This isn’t a tragedy. This is a family feast. Bring out the Chianti and someone fire up the oven and set the table.’”

Well, we’ve been throwing the best dinner party in the Church for the last 300 years. And the host, oh, trust me, is absolutely to die for. And try telling an Italian that too many people are coming for dinner.

Well, I like to imagine Paul at the head of that table, spotting someone hovering by the door. He would invite them: “Hey, come in. Sit down.”

“But Father, I’m a mess.”

“Yes, yes. But have you met the others?”

“And Father, I have doubts. I have so many doubts.”

And he would say, “So do they. [Unclear phrase.]”

“But Father, I’m not a saint.”

“Well, buddy, it’s dinner. We are not voting on your canonization.”

Pull Up a Chair

That is the table I picture: room for your sorrow, room for your laughter, room for the part of your life you still can’t explain. The love Paul found on the cross reaches all the way into ordinary life: a drafty house, a sick brother’s room, a family looking through the old photographs and a table where you can stop pretending that you’re fine.

So pull up a chair. Yes, you may hear the same story 40 times, but you will be among people who are glad that you came.

May the Passion of Jesus Christ be always in our hearts. Happy feast, everyone. Happy feast. God bless you all. Amen.

</details>

Fr.
