Wherever they’re at, I think it’s very important for us to be able to sit with them and be with them. Whether we listen, or, if it’s a time to share things, it’s important to do that too. But let them be the person to search that out. I’d say sometimes it’s better to listen and not say anything, to just sit with the person in their sadness or in their joy.

So it’s a gift. I think the power of presence is a gift for us as ministers, and it transforms everyone sitting around the table. It’s a very transforming experience. That’s where I think it’s a real gift.

Learning to Listen

Question: How did you hone your listening skills? Have you always been a good listener, Theresa, or is that something you realized you had to work on?

Theresa: Oh, I think it’s still a work in progress. Sometimes people say I talk too much, and sometimes my professors would say I don’t talk enough. Over the years, I’ve taken many workshops on active listening and things like that. But gradually, I think it’s just been the experience of being with people for so many years and learning to just sit back: “It’s not what you have to say, Theresa. It’s what they need to say.” So it’s like, okay, I can do this.

Recognizing the Crucified of Today

Question: After serving for so many years as a pastoral associate at St. Agnes Parish, how has your experience of the Passionist charism shaped the way you approach prison ministry? And where do you encounter the crucified of today among the women you meet?

Theresa: I’ve been in ministry for over 40 years, and I was at St. Agnes for eight or ten years. I came to St. Agnes in 2012, and I didn’t really know much about the Passionists, but I learned quickly. As I reflected on my years in ministry, and especially at St. Agnes, I realized that although I did not name it as such, I was being with the crucified, and I continue to be. Anytime we encounter people in ministry, they come from all walks of life, all places, and all kinds of experiences.

A Night with Eleven Women

For me, prison ministry has opened up a whole other experience, a learning and a challenge, because of these women we minister to and with. Actually, we were just there last night. We go once a month. So last night we were with the ladies, and it was sort of appropriate, since I was going to be talking to you today.

Usually we have maybe between two and four, maybe six ladies who come each time. We never know; they come in and out. Last night we had 11 people. It was a totally awesome experience. I mean, it’s totally awesome every month, but they just kept coming, and it was like, “Oh my word.”

What happened is that two of our regulars were evangelizing. They were speaking among their fellow inmates and saying, “We meet on Mondays, and if you’d like to come, you can come and meet other people.” And so they did. As I sat there and listened, they introduced themselves. Of course, we don’t know their backgrounds, but we do know that most of them have families and that they miss them. Some weeks they speak highly of their families, and some weeks they’re just very, very sad. So there were tears, and there was laughter last night, and that’s the way it usually is every week. But we had just never experienced that many people. They came up afterward and said thank you, and I said, “Well, come back. We’re here for you.”

The Pain Behind the Walls

They truly come from all places. I guess what I want to say is that they have experienced much more tragedy in their lives that has brought them to this point than we would ever realize, just from listening a little bit. Several of them shared their joys last night. One said, “Well, my court date has been moved up, and it looks like my parole is going to come,” and she’s living with that hope. It was like, “Oh, wow.”

And there’s the barbed wire around the outside of the whole prison grounds. That barbed wire is very, very painful, and I think it represents the pain that’s behind the walls sometimes.

Drawn to Women Facing Challenges

Question: Theresa, what first drew you to ministry with incarcerated women? And what were your discoveries when you first came into that environment and listened to their stories?

Theresa: I guess over the years I’ve always been drawn to women, especially women who are facing challenges in their lives, because as women, we know we do that quite regularly. And I thought, “Geez, I just don’t have enough hours in the day to do all the different kinds of ministries.” As I learned over the years and went from one ministry to another, whether it was education, hospital ministry, youth ministry, or whatever, I thought, “Someday, when I retire, I’m going to devote some time to this.”

As it turned out, a couple of years into my retirement, some of the women I minister with said, “Theresa, we’re looking for more people to do this.” It was like, oh, the Holy Spirit, she’d be my friend. So I said, “Well, okay. I’ve never really done this, but I’ve certainly listened to a lot of people over the years in their joys and sorrows and walked with them.” That’s where I realized that I really have been with the crucified and the downtrodden and everybody.

The White Chair

I used to have a white chair in my office. I believe the white chair is downstairs in our basement now; I brought it home with me. That was the chair in my office where people would sit and tell me their stories and share what was going on that day. I had everybody from pastors to music people to parents to teenagers. That’s where I would really hear all the ups and downs. I’ve learned a lot from people over the years, and that’s how it is when we sit with people: that presence. It just keeps coming back. It keeps coming back. It’s always there, and I’ve been really happy with that, and humbled, more humbled than anything else.

Walking Through the Prison Doors

I had never been in any kind of penal institution, not even a jail, the local, ordinary lockup or anything like that. So the first week I went there, and this pretty much happens every time now, you get frisked, you have to go through all the procedures, you can’t bring this in and you can’t bring that in, you get your badges, and so on. I took a picture last night of the place we go to, because just looking at it from the outside can be very daunting. And it’s even more daunting when you walk through those doors and walk across the campus to the chapel where we meet. It’s sort of like, “Wow, I wonder how this is going to work tonight.”

Just Human Beings Like the Rest of Us

But I quickly realized the first time, and every time, that these are just human beings, just like the rest of us, who have had tragedy in their lives and other things that have happened to bring them here at this point in time. They just want somebody to listen to them and treat them with dignity and respect, and just be there for them.

That’s what our circle is. We sit in a round circle every time, and we pray and we share, and that’s all they want: something simple like that, for somebody to take their time. And I can give them my time.

Question: If it were me, before I did it I’d be thinking about all the ways I had to prepare and how I’d go in and make this all work. And like you said, you get in there and realize it’s pretty simple. You just have to be there and let people speak, and treat them with respect. It’s not as complicated as we would make it out to be, right?

A Safe Place

Theresa: And they are so grateful. It’s just a spirit of gratitude, and they feel very much that this is a safe place, which is really important. When you’re in a situation like theirs, living together and working together, you don’t have many choices. So there’s a whole lot they’re probably not going to share with other people. That’s why we make sure they understand that what you say here is safe, and that we can be here for you at this point in time. It’s safe. It’s not going anywhere.

“Hope”

Question: One of the things you said that really resonated with us is, “Every visit, we walk away changed and humbled.” Can you share an encounter with one of the women that has stuck with you and changed the way you see yourself and God?

Theresa: The person I picked is one of our regulars, and I’ll call her Hope, because to me she exudes hope by the way she lives her life inside the walls. She’s in her early 60s, and she’s been incarcerated for over 40 years. We don’t know a lot about her family, but I know there may be a husband and maybe children. I’m not sure. She has exhausted whatever timeline they have for coming up for parole. There’s no way at this point that she’ll be given another chance for parole, so she’s a lifer. And in between all of this, she’s a two-time cancer survivor. She just beat cancer again in the last year.

What she does is spend most of her time being sort of the matriarch when new people come. She just has the personality and the charism to be there with them, to be that presence, helping them get settled and listening to them.

Training Service Dogs

And then there’s what she does for other people on the outside. She’s involved with a program training service dogs for institutions and other places. She brought Patrick, her dog at this point in time, to our meeting last night, and she lives for that. She spends her time with all these dogs, taking care of them and training them to go out and help other people. She’s just amazing. She’s just amazing.

“I Am Blessed”

When we ask her how she’s doing, her answer always is, “I am blessed. I am very blessed.”

Question: I bet that was going to be my guess.

Theresa: Yes. Hope is not her real name, like I said, but she exudes hope for all of us who are blessed to know her. She continues to show me the face of God in so many ways and reminds me that there’s goodness in all people, even though we don’t always see that. Each month, and we walked out of there again last night, I say the same thing: “It was so good to have so many people here tonight.” They just give us so much hope, and we’re very humbled.

Question: That’s beautiful.

Theresa: I’ve been in a lot of different areas and a lot of different ministries, but this has been by far one of the most life-giving, humbling, blessing… I don’t even know how else to say it.

Retirement Is a Relative Term

Question: What year did you start doing this ministry, Theresa?

Theresa: Let’s see, this is 2026, so probably around 2022. I was going to ask my partner last night, the person I go with, because she’s been doing it for years, but I forgot. At least four or five years.

Question: Okay.

Theresa: Shortly after retirement. I retired from St. Agnes in 2020, but retirement is a relative term, especially in ministry. [laughter] I won’t even go there right now. It continues to be fulfilling.

Question: That’s good. And that’s what we’re supposed to do. If we stop, that means everything’s over. And you’re not ready for things to be over, so you’ve got to keep going.

Theresa: Yep. That’s for sure.

“They Blossom”

Question: People who are incarcerated can sometimes be defined by the worst decision they have made, or by the circumstances that brought them to prison. What happens when someone encounters them instead as a person worthy of dignity, compassion, and love?

Theresa: They blossom. I believe they really look forward to our Monday nights, twice a month. Otherwise they wouldn’t come; they don’t have to come. I think it’s a chance for them to grow, and it’s a chance for us to grow. It also takes away some of that stigma that they should only be locked away because they’ve done something wrong. They certainly feel that from so many people, and sometimes from the administration. If somebody in charge of them is having a bad day, then everybody’s going to have a bad day. They get treated like, “You deserve to be here, and we don’t really care.”

“Worthy of His Love”

So we help them know that people care. Last night, they were sharing their “God moments.” One woman who has been there for 20 years came to the group for the first time last night. She said she was able to see something about her trial, and that it looks like there’s going to be a break in her life. When she shared her God moment, she said, “I feel that God is telling me that I’m a good person and that I’m worthy of His love.” And it’s like, we all are.

A Teachable Moment with Edison

Then I told a little story about my grandson. My housemate has four grandchildren, and they’ve all adopted me. We call this one the “demon child” some days, but he has a heart of gold. When he was about six or seven (he’s nine now), he was here at the house while I was getting ready to go to prison ministry. He said, “Where are you going?” I said, “I’m going to prison ministry.” He said, “What’s that?” I said, “I’m going to visit ladies who are in prison.” He said, “Well, aren’t there bad people in prison? So why would you want to go to prison?”

I said, “Well, Edison, there’s good and bad in everybody. I like to think that just because they’re in prison doesn’t mean they’re bad people. It means they’ve done something wrong, something bad, and they’re paying for it. Our actions have consequences.” It’s good to tell a seven-year-old that more often than not. I said, “It’s important for them to feel that God loves you, God loves me, and God also loves all of these people. When we mess up, we say we’re sorry and ask for forgiveness, and we can go on living our lives that way.” He said, “Oh, okay,” and went on his way. But he’s never forgotten that. It was a teachable moment.

Living the Paschal Mystery

So every month we go, I just like to help them feel that they are respected and worth something, like we all are. Certainly they’re sorry. Certainly some days they’re angry. Some days they’re depressed, and other days they’re just as happy as can be. That’s faith. That’s hope. They show me the Paschal Mystery. To me, they’re just living it. And they remind me how to do it too.

The Spirit Moves in Different Ways

It’s been very, very enriching, because several of them are not Catholic, and we’ve already had two people come into the Church in our group. We celebrated someone’s confirmation one night, and we also had the Anointing of the Sick for Hope when she was starting to go through her chemo. So they’re interested in some of those things too. Like I say, the Spirit moves in different ways.

Question: Yeah.

Theresa: They know that we’re Catholic, and many of them are. Many of them come from a Catholic background, and they share some of their stories about how they really didn’t listen to Sister. I’m not sure we all listened to Sister someday either. [laughter] It’s really okay to be human.

Question: Yeah, it is. We’d like to be perfect and not make mistakes, but I don’t think anybody’s been able to figure out how to do that.

When You Can’t Fix It

Question: Prison ministry is a place where you often cannot change someone’s circumstances. And having been a pastoral associate, my guess is that your instinct is, “Here’s a problem; let’s fix it.” So what have you learned about the value of simply showing up, listening, and accompanying someone when you cannot fix what they are experiencing? I’m sure that as you build relationships with these women, it has to be really hard not to think, “How can we fix this?”

Theresa: Well, I don’t like the fact that I cannot fix these things, because I do believe I can be a fixer more than I should be sometimes. I know that. But I have to keep playing the tape that I’m glad I have the opportunity to just be here with them, to be present to them in whatever space I’m in that night. Number one, we show up, we listen, and we accompany them as much as we can.

Clay in the Hands of the Potter

And I have to remember that God’s the fixer, and I’m just the clay in the hands of that potter. I’ve always loved that image, because it has so much potential. Hopefully God still thinks I have potential, and I’m still relying on Him, or Her, to walk with me.

They Don’t All Want to Be Fixed

On the other hand, and I may have said this before, I don’t think they all want to be fixed, many times. They just want to be treated decently and have somebody know that “We’re having a bad day today,” or “We’re really glad today,” or “The warden, or whoever’s in charge of my floor, is having a good day, so we’re all having a good day,” or “We haven’t been in the hole this week.” They explained what the hole was, and I thought, “I don’t know how anybody could really survive being in a hole, sometimes for 30 days at a time.” To me, that’s very degrading.

So I think I just have to stop and remember that I can only do so much. We’d all like some things to change, but I can be there for you as much as I can.

Compassion Is Not a Quick Fix

Question: The theme of this issue of Passionist magazine is the power of presence. What have the women you encounter taught you about compassion, and how has being present with them changed your own understanding of faith, hope, and the human capacity for transformation?

Theresa: Well, they continue to help me realize that being compassionate and feeling empathy for those who are suffering or going without, as with their incarceration, is not a quick fix. It’s something that’s happening in their lives and in my life, and it has to be okay, whatever we can do. I have to take a look at how compassionate I am and how compassionate I still need to be sometimes.

We have so many ways to help people in this life. It’s easy to put money in the poor box, or to take that angel tag off the tree at Christmastime and help someone’s lot, and that’s good. But I go back to thinking and believing that just being present, just being with people in their time of sorrow or joy, teaches me that everybody needs somebody.

“Everybody Needs Somebody”

That was one of the adages my mother would always say when I would complain about my brothers. She’d say, “Everybody needs somebody, and he’s your brother.” I’d say, “Yeah, I know. Don’t remind me.” But as one grows older, one gets a little more empathetic and sympathetic, some days.

Question: Yeah. Exactly.

Theresa: Exactly. And our women just want somebody to listen to them, like I said, and to sit quietly sometimes. Of course, we’re never really quiet. We’re quiet in a way, but it’s a joyful kind of coming together for the hour and a half that we’re there. They weren’t ready to leave last night, but we had to move everybody along.

Becoming Living Water

I guess it’s just to be there and show them that we’re there in body, mind, and spirit. We can be the living water that can open up a whole new life for the crucified. That’s what happened to the woman at the well after her encounter with Jesus. If you watch The Chosen, that part just keeps coming back, and it happens in our everyday lives too, in how people’s lives are changed.

So I look forward to visiting our women every month and sharing faith, and it helps me share my faith with others. It’s just very life-giving. And I have a better idea now that more people are open to transformation and to looking at each other and trying to see the face of Christ in one another. We all need to be reminded of that some days.

I think if these women can have hope in their situations, and have faith, and can ask, “Where are my God moments today?” then we can all be better people and remember that we can make the world a better place.

</details>

Retired pastoral associate Theresa Secord reflects on how simply showing up, listening, and treating incarcerated women with dignity has revealed to her the face of God, the Paschal Mystery, and the human capacity for hope and transformation.

[14
5,25,313
69
post-16078","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-features","tag-as-seen-in-passionist-magazine","tag-passionist-family","tag-pmfall26

The Gift of Hope: Theresa Secord Finds the Compassion of Christ Among the Imprisoned –
