{"id":1865,"date":"2025-04-29T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2025\/04\/29\/daily-scripture-april-30-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T20:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T01:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-april-30-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2025\/04\/29\/daily-scripture-april-30-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, April 30, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/MDRC-Night-Cross.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9925\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/043025.cfm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/043025.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acts 5:17-26<br>John 3:16-21<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A gentile came up to the great rabbi Hillel and challenged him: \u201cTeach me the Torah while I stand on one foot.\u201d&nbsp; Hillel responded: \u201cThat which you hate, do not do to others.&nbsp; That is the entire Torah.&nbsp; The rest is simply explanation.&nbsp; Go and learn it.\u201d&nbsp; Hillel was paraphrasing the command to love one\u2019s neighbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evangelist John is Hillel for us today with one of the most recognizable verses in the New Testament is here before us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFor God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.\u201d <\/em>(Jn 3:16)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the whole gospel in a nutshell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So popular and familiar is it that this passage, or its verse number, John 3:16, is emblazoned on T-shirts and sweatshirts.&nbsp; It is printed on coffee mugs, bookmarks, bumper stickers, even on the bottoms of In-\u2018N-Out milkshake containers.&nbsp; During football games and baseball games, someone, usually wearing a wild multi-colored wig, is waving a placard for all to see.&nbsp; And it reads: John 3:16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, despite all this biblical zeal, there lurks a problem.&nbsp; The passage has been clipped from its contextual moorings.&nbsp; Consequently, its real meaning and impact have been lost, gone adrift in a sea of sentimentality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The passage is indeed about God\u2019s love for us, for the whole world.&nbsp; God loves us so much that he gave us his son.&nbsp; No argument there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue lies with the word \u201cgave.\u201d&nbsp; John, the evangelist is using poetic word play here. That is, he\u2019s using a word that has both a literal and a deeper symbolic meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Greek, the word \u201cgave\u201d is <strong><em>didomi.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>It can mean quite literally \u201cto give,\u201d as in God \u201cgave\u201d us the gift of his son.&nbsp; But the word also has another, deeper meaning.&nbsp; It also means to surrender, to deliver up, hand over, as in Jesus was handed over, surrendered to the Romans for crucifixion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The passage now reveals a richer meaning.&nbsp; Yes, God loved us so much that he gave us his greatest gift, his son.&nbsp; &nbsp;But it means more.&nbsp; It means that God so loved the world that he surrendered his greatest gift, his son, to humanity\u2019s evil of crucifixion.&nbsp;
