{"id":1939,"date":"2025-02-14T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-15T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2025\/02\/14\/daily-scripture-february-15-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-02-14T21:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-15T03:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-february-15-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2025\/02\/14\/daily-scripture-february-15-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, February 15, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Feb-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27810\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/021525.cfm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/021525.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 3:9-24<br>Mark 8:1-10<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What were Jesus and his disciples to do with a large crowd in a deserted place, and very hungry after spending three days with them?&nbsp; There just wasn\u2019t enough bread for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus was \u201cmoved to pity for them\u2026If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way.\u201d&nbsp; Incidentally, in the early days of the Jesus movement, Christians were simply known as \u201cpeople of the way, or on the way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word for collapse (\u201cfaint\u201d in the RSV) is used elsewhere in the New Testament to mean \u201closing heart or getting discouraged in the faces of the struggles of the Christian life,\u201d scripture scholar Mary Healy observes in her book, <em>\u201cGospel of Mark<\/em>.<em>\u201d&nbsp; <\/em>Healy suggests the central question in today\u2019s gospel is this: \u201cHow will the disciples respond when God\u2019s people collapse or faint for lack of spiritual nourishment, and they do not have the resources to feed them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something strikingly similar occurred in March 2020 with the pandemic Covid 19, including, of course, in my corner of the world in Sierra Madre, Calif.&nbsp; All work abruptly stopped, businesses closed, people lost jobs.&nbsp; The most vulnerable were the hardest hit.&nbsp; Funds dried up for non-profit organizations serving the poor, homeless, the elderly and homebound.&nbsp; There just wasn\u2019t enough bread for them, so to speak.&nbsp; So many of God\u2019s people surely would surely \u201ccollapse on the way\u201d for lack of food or spiritual nourishment.&nbsp; How will today\u2019s disciple respond?&nbsp; By ignoring them?&nbsp; Too many people, not enough bread?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s gospel modeled their response.&nbsp; Jesus challenged his disciples to stretch their faith.&nbsp; In Eucharistic fashion, Jesus blessed the seven available loaves, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the hungry crowd.&nbsp; Rather than distributing the loaves himself, Jesus directed his disciples to take up this ministry of service. And \u201cthey ate and were satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So too did Jesus challenge his disciples through Sierra Madre and the San Gabriel Valley.&nbsp; Acting as the catalyst, the leadership of Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center coordinated its recourses with many groups and individuals.&nbsp; The retreat kitchen staff used its large kitchen and equipment to cook nourishing meals.&nbsp; Others generously donated money and volunteered time. Thousands of meals were prepared at the retreat.&nbsp; Many others delivered them daily to organizations that serve the poor, homebound and homeless, and to many needy individual homes.&nbsp; These meals nourished, not only bodies, but souls in need of hope of those on the way that looked so dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not too long ago, Pope Francis was asked: \u201cHow does prayer work when people are hungry?\u201d&nbsp; \u201cYou pray for the hungry,\u201d the pope responded. \u201cThen you feed them.&nbsp; That\u2019s how prayer works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pope was echoing the words attributed to St. Augustine: \u201cPray as though everything depends on God.&nbsp; And work as though everything depends on you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just so.&nbsp; In faith, Jesus will bless and break our seemingly meager bread.&nbsp; And in faith, we are to go out and share this bread of life with all in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Deacon Manuel Valencia is on the staff at Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center, Sierra Madre,&nbsp;California.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scripture: Genesis 3:9-24Mark 8:1-10 Reflection: What were Jesus and his disciples to do with a large crowd in a deserted place, and very hungry after spending three days with them?&nbsp;
