{"id":1972,"date":"2025-01-12T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2025\/01\/12\/daily-scripture-january-13-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-01-12T21:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T03:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-january-13-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2025\/01\/12\/daily-scripture-january-13-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, January 13, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Blowing-Tree.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18634\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/011325.cfm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/011325.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hebrews 1:1-6<br>Mark 1:14-20<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s gospel has no Christmas story, no manger or shepherds in Bethlehem, no Magi or star to lead them.&nbsp; And yet, the Christmas narrative is embedded within this gospel.&nbsp; It begins with the words: \u201cThe beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.&#8221;&nbsp; The word \u201cgospel\u201d had a double meaning in Mark\u2019s time.&nbsp; \u201cGospel\u201d or \u201cgood news\u201d was used in secular circles to announce an important event such as the birth of an heir to the Roman emperor.&nbsp; Mark with Spirit-filled inspiration announced the good news of the birth of the true king, Jesus the Christ, the promised Messiah.&nbsp; He embraced Isaiah\u2019s use of \u201cgood news.\u201d&nbsp; Centuries before, the Prophet Isaiah proclaimed: \u201cHow beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings <em>good news <\/em>who announces salvation, who says to Zion, \u2018Your God reigns\u2019\u201d (Isaiah 52:7).&nbsp;&nbsp; In today\u2019s gospel, Jesus Christ is fulfilling Isaiah\u2019s prophetic words. Jesus is announcing peace, bringing good news and salvation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Mark first throws cold water in our face.&nbsp; He writes these jarring words: \u201cNow after John was arrested.\u201d&nbsp; Only then does Mark complete his sentence: \u201cJesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, \u2018The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news\u2019\u201d (Mk 1:14-20 NRSV).&nbsp; Mark is telling us that Jesus lived in dangerous times.&nbsp; But that did not deter him from proclaiming the good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a broken world.\u00a0 Today, it is a world of a polarized society, of illness and unemployment, of loneliness and homelessness. The gospel never denies the reality in which we live. But the gospel also tells us that the world is filled with more, is charged with God\u2019s grace and presence.\u00a0 Jesus reminds us of this truth with his good news.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus invited his first disciples to follow him in proclaiming that good news \u2013 a time of peace and salvation in the midst of illness and darkness.&nbsp; Peter, Andrew, James, and John left everything to follow Jesus.&nbsp; They left behind emotional, social, and economic security.&nbsp; Jesus challenged them to let go of everything they were familiar with in order to join him in a journey of spiritual growth and self-awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ calls us too; right now.&nbsp; The time \u2013 <em>kairos <\/em>time, God\u2019s time \u2013 is fulfilled.&nbsp; This is our decisive moment.&nbsp; This <em>kairos <\/em>time divides our past from our future.&nbsp; Christ invites us to new life.&nbsp; It is time to repent, time to leave behind our old lives, time to drop those nets that tangle us in false security and detachments.&nbsp; Only then can Jesus transform us into fishers of people by proclaiming the good news.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kingdom is near, the kingdom is among us.&nbsp; In Jesus Christ, the kingdom has entered our time and place and circumstances.&nbsp; It is time for us to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ \u2013 as the Apostle Paul tells us \u201cin season and out of season.\u201d&nbsp; Today, we find ourselves in the \u201cout of season.\u201d&nbsp; Nevertheless, this present reality is the place where Christ meets us.&nbsp; Here is where he beckons us: \u201cfollow me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, this <em>kairos <\/em>time.\u00a0 God is very much with us in these times.\u00a0 And yet, for us, the good news is also this: with Jesus Christ, in us, we proclaim the good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Deacon Manuel Valencia is on the staff at Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center, Sierra Madre,&nbsp;California.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scripture: Hebrews 1:1-6Mark 1:14-20 Reflection: Mark\u2019s gospel has no Christmas story, no manger or shepherds in Bethlehem, no Magi or star to lead them.&nbsp;
