{"id":2096,"date":"2024-09-10T20:02:34","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T01:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2024\/09\/10\/daily-scripture-september-11-2024\/"},"modified":"2024-09-10T20:02:34","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T01:02:34","slug":"daily-scripture-september-11-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2024\/09\/10\/daily-scripture-september-11-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, September 11, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Sept-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35084\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/091124.cfm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/091124.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Corinthians 7:25-31<br>Luke 6:20-26<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the gospels, Jesus frequently makes enigmatic statements, but perhaps none so enigmatic as the Beatitudes in Luke\u2019s gospel today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBlessed are you who are poor, because God\u2019s kingdom is yours.<br>Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied.<br>Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.<br>Blessed ae you when people hate you\u2026Rejoice and leap for joy on that day!\u00a0 Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are we to make of these strange beatitudes, which are coupled with equally enigmatic woes to the rich, those whose stomachs are filled, who laugh now, and those who crave honor?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These beatitudes are and woes are descriptive rather than prescriptive.&nbsp; That is, they describe an already established reality, what is.&nbsp; A prescriptive statement describes what ought to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus isn\u2019t telling us, for example, to sell all we have and give it to the poor so we might attain the kingdom of God, although he later makes such a prescriptive demand of a rich man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is telling the poor that the kingdom is already (present tense) theirs.&nbsp; In the woes, Jesus tells the rich they have already received their reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps we can better understand Luke&#8217;s version of the beatitudes \u2014 and woes \u2014 within a broader Lukan theme, the great reversal.&nbsp; Jesus describes a reversal that is simply a fact of life \u2014 if we Christians ae willing to open our eyes to this reality.&nbsp; The kingdom of God and the Kingdom of this world are dramatically opposed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke presents a strong emphasis throughout his Gospel on the great reversal that the kingdom of God brings, beginning with Mary\u2019s Magnificat: \u201cHe has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.\u201d&nbsp; Think also of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.&nbsp; So many more great reversals may be recounted in Luke\u2019s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke had in mind a persecuted or marginalized Christian community.&nbsp; Luke wanted to encourage his community that despite their suffering, they belong, not to the kingdom of this world, but to the kingdom of God \u2014 right now \u2014 therefore, it\u2019s time to rejoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke is not trying to idealize poverty.&nbsp; Instead he is telling his community that in the kingdom of God, we are to care for one another, comfort one another, share with one another.&nbsp; Luke\u2019s emphasis throughout his gospel is generosity and compassion rather than poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On closer examination, then, it may be that today\u2019s gospel is not so much enigmatic, as it is radical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which message will we heed \u2014 Jesus\u2019 beatitudes or his woes?&nbsp; The more profound question is this, in which kingdom do we reside right now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells us: choose the kingdom of God.&nbsp; Then with Mary, we may proclaim \u201cMy soul rejoices in the Lord!\u201d&nbsp;
