{"id":2113,"date":"2024-08-25T02:01:04","date_gmt":"2024-08-25T07:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2024\/08\/25\/daily-scripture-august-25-2024\/"},"modified":"2024-08-25T02:01:04","modified_gmt":"2024-08-25T07:01:04","slug":"daily-scripture-august-25-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2024\/08\/25\/daily-scripture-august-25-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, August 25, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Aug-25.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34911\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/082524.cfm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/082524.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b<br>Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32<br>John 6:60-69<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our Gospel reading for Sunday (John 6:60-69) marks the end of the Bread of Life Discourse which we have been reading over the past few weeks. And, perhaps surprisingly, it doesn\u2019t end with Jesus triumphantly convincing many people about who He was and why He was there. Many people who had accompanied Him were now leaving Him, because they couldn\u2019t understand all the talk about Jesus as the living bread that came down from heaven, or about whoever didn\u2019t eat of His flesh and drink of His blood not having eternal life. They say, \u201cThis saying is hard; who can accept it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What follows is a demonstration of Jesus\u2019 humanity, and an occasion where Peter actually comes off quite well. When Jesus sees all the people leaving Him, He turns to the Twelve and asks, \u201cDo you also want to leave?\u201d And Peter, without the usual bravado or air of self-importance, simply says, \u201cMaster, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we read further in John\u2019s Gospel, we see that neither Peter nor the rest of the Twelve completely understood what Jesus was talking about, but they were willing to stick with Him when others were leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are we willing to stick with Jesus even though we may not completely understand what He\u2019s saying to us, or as may be more often the case, we <em>do<\/em> understand, but we don\u2019t necessarily like it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we do believe that Jesus is the Holy One of God, and we do believe that He has given us the words of eternal life, we are called once again, to consider our response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we celebrate the Mass, and listen to God\u2019s word, and take in Jesus\u2019 total gift of Himself, are we really supposed to give in to despair about ourselves, or give in to self-righteousness about others? Or do we come humbly before God, accepting God\u2019s love for us in Jesus Christ, and striving to love as He loves? This does not mean we forego working for justice, but while we may condemn injustice, we leave the condemnation of others to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the words of Joshua in our first reading (Joshua 2:1-2a, 15-17, 18b), may we \u201cserve the Lord,\u201d not the current trend of contempt for the \u201cother.\u201d In the words of St. Paul in our second reading (Ephesians 5:21-32), may we \u201cbe subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ;\u201d for He <em>does<\/em> have the \u201cwords of eternal life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fr.
