Once again, Jesus calls us to be renegades of the conventional by completely rethinking what we take to be normal and reasonable. Outside the world of the gospel, when someone treats us unfairly\u2014when they injure us by thoughts, words, or actions\u2014it seems perfectly sensible to respond with more of the same. In a rough and tumble world, the logic of \u201can eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth\u201d seems fitting. Similarly, to share with a neighbor in need before calculating if we can afford to give them anything at all strikes us as terribly irresponsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, as he always does, Jesus turns our usual patterns of thinking and valuing upside down. In place of always settling scores, Jesus demands nonviolence and peace, forgiveness and reconciliation. And when Jesus insists that we offer a pestering neighbor our \u201ccloak\u201d as well as our \u201ctunic,\u201d he\u2019s asking that we replace the language of \u201cI\u201d and \u201cmine\u201d with \u201cwe\u201d and \u201cours.\u201d By the logic of the gospel, instead of clinging tightly to what we own, we should regularly look for ways to share it. Indeed, in the world Jesus envisions, we should customarily give away more than we keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sermon on the Mount presents Jesus\u2019 outline for a truly good and happy life\u2014and we spend most of our lives resisting it. It\u2019s hard (and more than a little scary) to replace retaliation with nonviolence, grudges with forgiveness, and our own comfort and security with joyful generosity. But deep down we know Jesus is right. There\u2019s a revolution stirring in today\u2019s gospel\u2014a revolution Jesus calls the reign of God\u2014and Jesus invites us to be part of it. How we respond to that invitation is the most important decision we will ever make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Paul J.
