{"id":2296,"date":"2024-02-12T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2024\/02\/12\/daily-scripture-february-13-2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-12T21:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T03:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-february-13-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2024\/02\/12\/daily-scripture-february-13-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, February 13, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Loaves-and-Fishes-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32367\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/021324.cfm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/021324.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James 1:12-18<br>Mark 8:14-21<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The text for today is immediately following Jesus feeding the crowds for a second time, the Pharisees demand for a \u201csign\u201d and Jesus\u2019 refusal to give them one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so, the story is set in the boat. The disciples are discussing the fact that they only have one loaf of bread (v.14) and Jesus warns them (v. 15) to guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod. Then in v.16 which seems to flow better with v. 14, the disciples conclude that he must be thinking about their lack of bread. What just happened in chapter 6 and again in chapter 8? Obviously, the disciples missed those signs. They are focused on their comfort\u2014their food while Jesus seems to be reflecting on his conversation with the Pharisees as he interrupts the flow of their thoughts and is then brought abruptly to the reality; the disciples didn\u2019t get it. They didn\u2019t make the connection between Jesus multiplying the loaves, feeding and satisfying the crowds and their \u201cone loaf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then poses a series of seven questions beginning and ending with, \u201cDo you not yet understand?\u201d Sandwiched between are his prompts to open the disciples\u2019 eyes to the signs by jogging their memory. They relay the details back to him exactly as it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this place in the story, don\u2019t you feel for Jesus? Can\u2019t you just hear the sadness and disappointment and maybe even desperation in his voice? Time is running out; will anyone get it? These verses cause me to pause and reflect on Jesus\u2019 humanity, something I often forget to do. In a very real way, it feels as if he is already carrying his cross. So much suffering, so much love, so much energy offered up for me and for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aren\u2019t you glad the disciples\u2019 humanity is displayed for us? I\u2019ve often felt that if they had understood and got everything right, most of us mere humans might never take the Scriptures to read because the bar is set so high. It might feel unachievable, like some of the lives of the Saints that are hard to live up to\u2026well, at least I think so. So happily, for us, the disciples set a low bar here and I think we tend to believe that we would get the sign in this circumstance. I\u2019m not so sure about that. Scripture has so much to teach us\u2014humanity fails over and over again to see the signs of God\u2019s abundance and miracles. I know I do. How many times has my focus been on what I lack instead of what the Lord is doing in my life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gratefully, we press on knowing that Jesus is the \u201cone loaf of bread\u201d which feeds us all with abundant left-overs! Jew or Gentile, slave or free. All are invited to the Eucharistic feast, where Jesus and only Jesus, can open our eyes and nourish our souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May our Lenten journey open our eyes to see God\u2019s love-in-action within us and all around us.
