The Israelites naturally assumed that leprosy was the punishment for sin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Feb-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32346\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, leprosy had at least three dimensions \u2014 medical, religious, and social.\u00a0 The afflicted person suffered medically from a serious skin disease.\u00a0 This disease made them ritually, that is, spiritually unclean and thus forbidden from entering a synagogue or any place of worship.\u00a0 Perhaps leprosy\u2019s worst immediate punishment was social.\u00a0 Lepers were required to live in isolation and to keep a distance of at least 50 paces from other people, so as not to spread the disease.\u00a0 Only the examination by a priest and his pronouncement that the person no longer had leprosy could he or she return to their family and society.\u00a0 Until then, the afflicted person, unable to work, was reduced to begging<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was the dire situation of the leper who approached Jesus.&nbsp; \u201cIf you wish,\u201d the leper pleaded, \u201cyou can make me clean.\u201d&nbsp; In making his request, the leper violated the distance rule.&nbsp; He came close to Jesus.&nbsp; And Jesus, too, broke a serious rule by reaching out and touching the leper.&nbsp; \u201cI do will it,\u201d Jesus said to the leper.&nbsp; \u201cBe made clean.\u201d&nbsp; And the leprosy left him immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus then warned him, \u201cSee that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest\u2026\u201d&nbsp; This once leprose man who had disobeyed Mosaic law by approaching Jesus, now disobeyed Jesus by proclaiming how he had been made clean by Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, the man once isolated from family and society, now freely entered the town, having been cleansed medically, religiously, and socially.&nbsp; And Jesus, who had touched the leper, now was forced to go into a kind of \u201cleprose\u201d isolation from people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, undoubtedly, is what Paul meant when he wrote, \u201cGod made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God\u201d (2 Cor. 6:21).&nbsp; Symbolically, Jesus became a leper so that the cleansed leper might become the righteousness of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So too with us, the lepers of today, we rightly approach Jesus in faith and hope, asking for his help, his compassion, and his forgiveness.&nbsp;
