{"id":2465,"date":"2023-08-20T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2023\/08\/20\/daily-scripture-august-21-2023\/"},"modified":"2023-08-20T20:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T01:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-august-21-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2023\/08\/20\/daily-scripture-august-21-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, August 21, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Aug-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30605\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/082123.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/082123.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judges 2:11-19<br>Matthew 19:16-22<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rich young man of the ruling class who owned a lot of property runs up to Jesus.&nbsp; He was very influential and a person of authority, moral and kept the commandments and probably very devout.&nbsp; The young man asks Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life.&nbsp; Jesus responds: \u201cKeep the commandments\u201d.&nbsp; The young man asks: <strong><em>\u201cWhich ones?\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (Matthew 19:18)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And Jesus said,&nbsp;\u201cYou shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>Honor your father and mother; and&nbsp;You shall love your neighbor as yourself.\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<sup>20 <\/sup><\/strong><\/em>(Matthew 19: 18-20).<strong><em><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is interesting to note that these commandments pertain to our relationships with others.&nbsp; The young man replies: \u201c<strong><em>All these things I have kept, what am I still lacking?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><em>(<\/em>Mathew 19:21) We know Jesus answer next: \u201c<strong><em>Go sell what you and give to the poor and come follow me.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; (Matthew 19:22)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The young man went away grieving because he could not give up his love for possessions and earthly treasures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many of us who could sound like the wealthy young man.&nbsp; We have observed the commandments most of our lives, gone to mass frequently and put our envelope in the collection basket. The young man asks Jesus what he is lacking.&nbsp; He knew that something was missing in his life, but he couldn\u2019t quite identify that missing element. This gospel challenges us to take a few moments today and talk to Jesus about what might be missing or lacking in our spiritual life.&nbsp; Like the young man, do we need to do more for the poor and vulnerable in our communities?&nbsp; Are we lacking a daily prayer life or have we elderly relatives in nursing homes whom we never visit?&nbsp; Try and figure out what more we can do to gain eternal life and then put together a plan to do it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord, today help me to discern what I am lacking and give me the grace and strength to go and do it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Carl Middleton is a theologian\/ethicist and a member of the Passionist Family.<br><br>*Biblical&nbsp;
