{"id":2481,"date":"2023-08-03T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2023\/08\/03\/daily-scripture-august-4-2023\/"},"modified":"2023-08-03T20:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T01:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-august-4-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2023\/08\/03\/daily-scripture-august-4-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, August 4, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Memorial of St. John Vianney, patron of priests &amp; parish clergy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080423.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080423.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leviticus 23: 1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34b-37<br>Matthew 13:54-58<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Remembering, Celebrating, and Proclaiming\u2026<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Aug-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30491\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s Scripture readings and the August 4<sup>o<\/sup> feast of St. John Vianney challenge us to remember the \u201croots\u201d of our faith, to celebrate God\u2019s unconditional love for us &#8212; and then use our gifts and shortcomings to spread the Saving News of God\u2019s love in the person of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lengthy reading from Leviticus summarizes the Israelite liturgical year, helping them remember the great events of their history whereby God saved them from harm and made them His own.&nbsp; They were to celebrate Sacred assemblies, consume unleavened bread, refrain from work, make sacrifices and other mortifications:&nbsp; to help give vitality to their relationship with God who loves and saves them.&nbsp; The same is true for us, centuries later!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selection from Matthew\u2019s Gospel recalls Jesus\u2019 rejection by his hometown folks.&nbsp; They saw Him a wise and powerful Man, a convincing Speaker\u2026but where did He get these gifts?&nbsp; He\u2019s Jesus, the son of Joseph the carpenter and Mary\u2026&nbsp; His message is \u201crepentance\u201d and God\u2019s Kingdom\u2026challenging the hearts of His listeners then and now.&nbsp; Deep faith is required to accept Him and His message&#8211; faith rooted in God\u2019s working throughout all of history, even from earliest times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we celebrate the holy life of a 19<sup>o<\/sup> century disciple of Jesus, St. John Vianney.&nbsp; A simple man with a humble background, a simple theology; his zeal in spreading God\u2019s love helped build the Church of his day.&nbsp; He is especially known for his selfless ministry of celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation at his parish in Ars, France.&nbsp; He regularly spent long hours sharing the Sacrament of Reconciliation with thousands of penitents who at times traveled great distances for a few graced moments with him.&nbsp; His loving priestly ministry flowed from his intense spiritual life, based on both prayer and mortification&#8211; leading him to being named in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI as the \u201cpatron of priests\u201d and parish clergy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God indeed loves each of us and invites us to proclaim that love in our vocations as married, single, or priestly\/religious persons.&nbsp; Today, Moses, Jesus, and St. John Vianney challenge us to be zealous in living our vocations and sharing our faith.&nbsp; Do we give ourselves special times of faith renewal and celebration (e.g., a holy hour, a retreat)?&nbsp; Do we seek and offer forgiveness for the sinfulness we experience in ourselves or others?&nbsp; Certainly Moses, Jesus, and St. John Vianney would have us 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century disciples humbly pray the words of today\u2019s response-Psalm 81: \u201cSing with joy to God our help!\u201d&nbsp; May our lives proclaim our \u201cAmen!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fr.
