{"id":2801,"date":"2022-08-01T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2022\/08\/01\/daily-scripture-august-2-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-08-01T20:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T01:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-august-2-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2022\/08\/01\/daily-scripture-august-2-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, August 2, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/August-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25461\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080222.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080222.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeremiah 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22<br>Matthew 14:22-36 or 15:1-2, 10-14<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;<br>and, beginning to sink, he (Peter) cried out, \u2018Lord, save me!\u2019<br>Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him,<br>and said to him, \u201cO you of little faith, why did you doubt?<\/em> &nbsp;-Matthew 14:30-31<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A member of my family, when she was struggling with alcohol addiction and depression, told me that her most heartfelt and honest prayer had been: \u201cGod, help me.\u201d And we hear St. Peter utter this prayer in today\u2019s Gospel too: \u201cLord, save me!\u201d In the course of our lives, how often have we prayed this simple prayer that acknowledges our need for God and God\u2019s help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In today\u2019s first reading , the prophet Jeremiah is once again giving a message of God\u2019s love to a people in trouble. In the forty years that Jeremiah ministered as&nbsp; prophet, there were many times when the people strayed from their relationship with God, causing Jeremiah much sorrow and the people much confusion and suffering, some of which is described in graphic detail in today\u2019s first reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the people in difficult situations in today\u2019s Scriptures, we sometimes feel vulnerable and powerless and even lost. Like St. Peter, we may fear we are sinking, or even drowning. Acknowledging our situation can bring us to a deeper dependency on God. But how do we keep our relationship with God alive? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No relationship can survive without conversation; we call conversation with God \u201cprayer\u201d. In today\u2019s Gospel, Jesus gives us an example of prayer. After long days of teaching and healing, \u201che went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening He (Jesus) was there alone.\u201d(Matthew 14:23) While Jeremiah was in prison (as often happens to prophets), he received this message: \u201cCall to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you great things beyond the reach of your knowledge.\u201d (Jeremiah 33:3) Jeremiah\u2019s prayer, like all good conversations, had some speaking and some listening. And these conversations with God sustained him in his forty difficult years as a prophet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of my favorite hymns about prayer is \u201cJust as I Am\u201d by Charlotte Elliot. Here is the second verse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust as I am, though tossed about<br>With many a conflict, many a doubt<br>Fighting and fears within without<br>Oh, Lamb of God, I come, I come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like when we meet with a close friend, we come to God just as we are. And God meets us there, ready for a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Patty Gillis is a retired Pastoral Minister.
