{"id":2803,"date":"2022-07-30T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-31T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2022\/07\/30\/daily-scripture-july-31-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-07-30T20:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-31T01:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-july-31-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2022\/07\/30\/daily-scripture-july-31-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, July 31, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/July-31.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25458\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/073122.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/073122.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23<br>Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11<br>Luke 12:13-21<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Happy Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may be shocked to hear this, but I like funerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, just bear with me for a minute.&nbsp; If you don\u2019t know me well, let me tell you a little about myself.&nbsp; I\u2019m a father, a composer, musician, performer, director, writer, liturgist, speaker, minister \u2013 celebrating now 37 years working in and for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (I\u2019m also outrageously handsome &amp; so very humble).&nbsp; In addition to the countless masses, services, liturgies, weddings, baptisms, and other events, as you might imagine. I have ministered at or attended so many funerals\u2026 I stopped counting after 1,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I really like funerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, I\u2019m not nuts.&nbsp; Well, perhaps a little bit, but in a good way.&nbsp; See, while funerals are largely viewed as perhaps the saddest and wretchedly emotional time in people\u2019s lives, they also are the ultimate celebration we have as humans.&nbsp; The funeral mass, the Rite of Christian Burial, is the powerful celebration of the absolute culmination of our life, our purpose.&nbsp; The race being won, the soul that once inhabited the tent that lays in that casket over there is now running in the vast playground of God\u2019s loving arms.&nbsp; As heartbroken as we, those left behind, may feel, the true glory isn\u2019t that the person we mourn in this life is dead\u2026 it\u2019s that they\u2019ve never been more alive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ve never been more alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me tell you about something interesting I hear it at just about every single funeral for which I minister or attend.&nbsp; And if I were a betting man, I\u2019d bet you\u2019ve heard it as well.&nbsp; Shoot\u2026 you\u2019ve probably said it.&nbsp; I have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell people you love them while they can still hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a universal thing when people grieve, I think, that they want to help others not make the same mistakes they made, and so they offer suggestions like that one.&nbsp; It\u2019s so well meaning, and I think so beautiful, and absolutely we must do it.&nbsp; We must.&nbsp; And if you\u2019re at all like me, you\u2019ll get sidetracked and time passes and don\u2019t do it at all.&nbsp; We\u2019re human, I guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow many times must He call my name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That portion of lyric from the Praise &amp; Worship song \u201cI Will Choose Christ\u201d by Tom Booth resonates with me deeply.&nbsp; It always has.&nbsp; It\u2019s like the funeral-eulogizers\u2026 Over and over again, I hear it.&nbsp; \u201cTell them you love them\u2026\u201d&nbsp; \u201cPAUL \u2013 I\u2019m CALLING you\u2026.\u201d&nbsp; One thing I don\u2019t want is to regret my lack of reaching out to people before they die.&nbsp; I can\u2019t get that time back, that\u2019s for sure.&nbsp; And still I sometimes forget (on purpose).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s scripture lays it on the line.&nbsp; In no uncertain terms, the readings tell us to guard against all greed, and focus on what matters to God.&nbsp; In the First Reading, Qoheleth (the probable writer of this passage), says that working for purely wealth and possessions is not only foolish but results in sorrow, grief, and anxiety.&nbsp;&nbsp; Jesus echoes this in no small way as he describes the rich man in the Gospel parable who believes he has stored up enough possessions to guarantee a good life without worries \u2013 or so he thinks.&nbsp; See, any reliance on wealth and possessions is in vain, for both worldly possessions, and this life, are fleeting.&nbsp; What truly matters is that finale \u2013 our inheritance that only God can give \u2013 eternal life. What \u201cmatters to God\u201d is letting go of things which hinder us from growing into the fullness of life, because we, as people of faith, know our ultimate goal, and we must focus on that, and share it the good news with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTonight your very soul will be demanded of you,\u201d Luke writes in today\u2019s Gospel.&nbsp; It\u2019s true, \u201cwe know not the day, nor the hour,\u201d and no matter what, we can\u2019t take any of this world with us when we go.&nbsp; Sure, in this world we all need currency and possessions that aid us in living the life to which God has beckoned us, but we are called not to love a floor-wax or a car, but to love each other. We are asked to serve, and to walk, humbly, the path to Heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, friends, I don\u2019t know about you, but no matter how many times I mess it up, I\u2019m going to stand when I hear Him call my name, drop the things I hold so tightly, and run past \u201cGo,\u201d do not collect $200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is it that you need to let go of today?&nbsp;&nbsp; Let\u2019s do it, together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dear God of all, <\/em><br><em>thank you for the gift of Eternal Life.<\/em><br><em>Grant us the grace to see you, <\/em><br><em>to hear you, <\/em><br><em>and to drop all that weighs us down, <\/em><br><em>so we may know what it\u2019s like <\/em><br><em>to never be more alive.
