{"id":2829,"date":"2022-06-30T20:41:32","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T01:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2022\/06\/30\/daily-scripture-july-1-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-06-30T20:41:32","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T01:41:32","slug":"daily-scripture-july-1-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2022\/06\/30\/daily-scripture-july-1-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, July 1, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/July-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25236\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/070122.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/070122.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amos 8:4-6, 9-12<br>Matthew 9:9-13<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflection:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first reading for today is a blistering attack on the rich and powerful who exploit the poor for their own gain.\u00a0 Amos, the eighth-century prophet, is known as one of the most powerful voices in the Bible calling for social justice.\u00a0 Amos did not aspire to this role but was \u201cdrafted\u201d by God to do so.\u00a0 In a poignant passage, he exclaims, \u201cI am not a prophet, nor do I belong to a company of prophets.\u00a0 I am a herdsman and a dresser of sycamores, but the Lord took me from following the flock, and the lord said to me, \u2018Go, prophesy to my people Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And prophesy he did!&nbsp; In today\u2019s reading, Amos challenges his fellow Israelites: \u201cHear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land!\u201d&nbsp; His indictments of those who exploit the poor have an eerie contemporary quality.&nbsp; He accuses them of reducing the size of the containers for the wheat and fixing the scales and the weights that measure out the food of the poor.&nbsp; They are willing to sell out a poor man \u201cfor a pair of sandals.\u201d Such cruelty and injustice, Amos warns in blunt words, will earn the wrath of God, the one who cares for the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s care for the poor and vulnerable is one of the most consistent and challenging motifs in the Bible from start to finish.&nbsp; The basic logic is that God is compassionate and just and cares deeply for the well-being of those most vulnerable and in need of support.&nbsp; One recurring biblical expression for this is God\u2019s provident love for \u201cthe widow, the orphan, and the sojourner\u201d\u2014each of whom were vulnerable in a strong clan culture that could leave an \u201coutsider\u201d unprotected or supported. A fundamental conviction of the Old Testament is that Israel was a \u201ccovenant\u201d people, God promising to protect and nourish them but they, in turn, expected to care for each other. Those made \u201cin the image and likeness of God, were to act with the same sense of compassion and justice characteristic of the God of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gospel selection for today from Matthew\u2019s Gospel moves in a similar direction.&nbsp; We hear of Jesus\u2019 call to Matthew to become a disciple: \u201cFollow me.\u201d&nbsp; Immediately this tax collector, despised by some of his fellow citizens, gets up from his \u201ccustoms post\u201d and follows Jesus.&nbsp; We can presume that Matthew was ecstatic at this recognition by Jesus and invites his Master to dine with him and his friends, identified by Matthew as \u201cmany tax collectors and sinners.\u201d&nbsp; This, of course, earns a rebuke of Jesus by his religious opponents: \u201cWhy,\u201d they ask Jesus\u2019 disciples, \u201cdoes your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus\u2019 answer echoes the spirit of Amos, \u201cThose who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.&nbsp; Go and learn the meaning of the words, <em>I desire mercy, not sacrifice<\/em> [a quotation from the prophet Hosea]. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.\u201d Throughout the Gospels, Jesus reaches out in compassion to the poor, the lost, and the despised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The great saints of our Catholic tradition have exemplified this same spirit of compassion and care for the poor, from the iconic medieval Saint Francis of Assisi to the not yet canonized Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic worker movement.&nbsp; It is also a constant theme of Pope Francis\u2019 teaching and example.&nbsp; In today\u2019s Eucharist the same challenge comes to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fr.
