{"id":2835,"date":"2022-06-24T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-25T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2022\/06\/24\/daily-scripture-june-25-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-06-24T20:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-25T01:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-june-25-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2022\/06\/24\/daily-scripture-june-25-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, June 25, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/African-Kids-Share-Rice.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25189\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Memorial of<\/strong> <strong>the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/062522.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/062522.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lamentations 2:2, 10-14, 18-19<br>Luke 2:41-51<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflection:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In vain they ask their mothers,<\/em><br><em>\u201cWhere is the grain?\u201d<\/em><br><em>As they faint away like the wounded<\/em><br><em>in the streets of the city,<\/em><br><em>And breathe their last<\/em><br><em>in their mothers\u2019 arms<\/em>.<br>~Lamentations 2:11-12<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Book of Lamentations was likely compiled between 586 and the end of the 6th century B.C.E.\u2014over 2500 years ago.&nbsp; Yet the situation it describes sounds pretty familiar from our daily news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations released a report this month entitled \u201cHunger Hotspots. FAO-WFP early warnings on acute food insecurity\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cc0364en\/cc0364en.pdf\">https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cc0364en\/cc0364en.pdf<\/a>). It begins with the tragic fact that \u201cacute food insecurity globally continues to escalate.\u201d Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia all have populations projected to experience starvation or death from June to September 2022, the \u201coutlook period\u201d of the report.&nbsp; And these are just the countries that meet the conditions for \u201cc<em>atastrophe.<\/em>\u201d&nbsp; Many others are of <em>high concern<\/em>: Burkina Faso, Chad, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Benin, Cabo Verde, Guinea, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Angola, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mozambique\u2026all <em>Hunger Hotspots<\/em>. In Illinois, where I live, 1,211,410 people are facing hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Jewish liturgical tradition, Lamentations is read once a year on the ninth of Av, a fast day commemorating the heart-rending destruction of both the first Temple in 587 B.C.E. and the second Temple in 70 C.E. The anguish of the poems is palpable, a communal expression of grief and mourning for a way of life that is no more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can we not feel anguish today? Ten thousand children die daily from chronic poor nutrition. Soaring food prices driven by the war in Ukraine, persistent drought due to climate change in some countries, at times combined with conflict, and the ongoing economic impact of COVID-19, are driving up food insecurity worldwide. And food insecurity is just one among many interconnected global crises we are facing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it feels as if numbness is safer than giving ourselves over to lament in the face of such excruciating violence and suffering. Yet the Book of Lamentations invites us beyond the temptation to numbness, witnessing to our deep human need for collective lament in the face of incomprehensible realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And today, the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary offers us comfort and courage in our grief and lament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, Pope Francis asked us to join him in consecrating all humanity to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.&nbsp; \u201cTurn to Mary,\u201d he invited, \u201cand knock at the door of her heart,\u201d saying \u201cWe are your beloved children. In every age you make yourself known to us, calling us to conversion. At this dark hour, help us and grant us your comfort. Say to us once more: \u2018Am I not here, I who am your Mother?\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" id=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Mary is the mother who is always with us and loves us unconditionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lord, knowing we are held in the tender love of Mary\u2019s heart, help us to truly feel the pain of our world today.&nbsp; Let us together lament and \u201cpour out our hearts like water\u201d (Lam 2:19).
