{"id":2990,"date":"2022-01-01T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-02T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/2022\/01\/01\/daily-scripture-january-2-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-01-01T21:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-01-02T03:00:00","slug":"daily-scripture-january-2-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2022\/01\/01\/daily-scripture-january-2-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Scripture, January 2, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Jan-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23023\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Epiphany of the Lord<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scripture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/010222.cfm\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/010222.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaiah 60:1-6<br>Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6<br>Matthew 2:1-12<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflexi\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surprisingly, in today\u2019s Gospel of Matthew, the first people to visit Baby Jesus and pay homage to Him were Gentiles who travelled from another country, not Jews who lived close by. The Greek word \u201cEpiphany\u201d (<em>epiphanos<\/em>) meaning&nbsp; <em>appearance<\/em>&nbsp;o&nbsp;<em>manifestation<\/em>&nbsp;o <em>showing up<\/em>, describes&nbsp;Jesus\u2019&nbsp;first appearance to the world. And the foreign visitors, the searchers from the east, represent the entire world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major theme in Matthew\u2019s gospel is that God\u2019s salvation extends beyond Jesus\u2019 immediate Jewish community to include the Gentiles as well as the Jews. In other words, God\u2019s love embraces all. The visit of the Magi is a message of inclusion at the very beginning of Jesus\u2019 life. We hear this message of inclusion again in Jesus\u2019 final commission: \u201cGo and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you\u201d. (Mt. 28: 19-20)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In today\u2019s second reading, St. Paul tells the Ephesians: \u201cthe Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.\u201d In God\u2019s mind, there are no insiders nor outsiders. As members of the same body, we are interconnected in a common life. So, as we begin 2022, how does the feast of Epiphany\u2019s message of inclusion effect our relationships? Do we really believe God is calling us to an ever-deepening inclusion, to extend our arms and hearts as Jesus did, to embrace the whole world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so, we may ask ourselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are most of our days spent with those who look like us, live like us, worship like us, and think like us? The Magi went way beyond their comfort zones in search of Jesus. Can we do the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do we trust that we will gain from being with those different from ourselves? Can we make the commitment to hone our skills in dialog, and in cultural literacy this year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As citizens, where does the message of Jesus\u2019 Epiphany lead us this year? Will the public policies we choose to support serve to break down the barriers to inclusion in our own country and around the world? Will the suffering of those discriminated against because they are \u201cOther\u201d disturb us to action? Will we hear the calls from those on the margins of this world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May all our travels of the heart and mind and soul this year end as happily as they did for the Magi:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>They were overjoyed at seeing the star,&nbsp;<br>and on entering the house<br>they saw the child with Mary his mother.<br>They prostrated themselves and did him homage. <\/em>~ Matthew 2:10-11<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Patty Gillis is a retired Pastoral Minister.
