{"id":4872,"date":"2025-08-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-03T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/?p=4872"},"modified":"2025-08-09T23:36:02","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T04:36:02","slug":"sunday-homily-august-3-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2025\/08\/03\/sunday-homily-august-3-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Homily, August 3, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-38880c9\" data-block-id=\"38880c9\"><style>.stk-38880c9 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-2, #7b272c) !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-38880c9 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">Reasonable Greed?<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To All,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">In our Gospel reading for Sunday (Luke 12:13-21), Jesus says: \u201cTake care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one\u2019s life does not consist of possessions.\u201d If we look at the request that prompted that statement, and the parable Jesus tells after it, these words become more challenging, I think, because the greed Jesus is talking about is not the greed that we would necessarily find repulsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me explain. The request that leads to Jesus\u2019 statement comes from someone in the crowd that has gathered to listen to Jesus: \u201cTeacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.\u201d This kind of dispute, unfortunately, happens in families that are not rich at all. And maybe we can even sympathize with the person. After all, is there a good reason why he shouldn\u2019t have a share in the inheritance? Could this even be a matter of justice? But Jesus replies, \u2018Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbiter?\u201d And then He says those words about greed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, there is the parable about a rich man whose land produces such an abundant harvest that he doesn\u2019t have room to store it all. He eventually decides to build bigger silos so he can store it all, and say to himself: \u201cNow, as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!\u201d Wouldn\u2019t we all want so much that we wouldn\u2019t have to worry ever again about having enough? But, again, Jesus ends the parable with God saying to the man, \u201cYou fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?\u201d And then Jesus says, \u201cThus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You see, Jesus is not talking about the kind of greed that is pictured as some old miser counting his money alone in some mansion, utterly absorbed by how much money there is, and how much more he wants. Jesus is talking about being caught up in what seems to be a reasonable desire for wealth. And that is what makes His words so challenging! Jesus calls us to focus on what is important to God, and be willing to have that be important to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some ways, Jesus\u2019 words link greed to complacency (\u201crest, eat, drink, be merry!) \u2013 that temptation to think, \u201cAs long as I got mine, everything\u2019s all right.\u201d If the economy works for me, but there are still people left out, or there is still injustice, is that okay with me, with us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two quotes I would like to share with you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus wasn\u2019t telling us to become poor. He was warning us about how we who are not poor can construct a life that cuts us off from the poor. We can insulate ourselves from two-thirds of the world.\u201d <br>&#8211; Bishop Ken Untener<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove&#8230; but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.\u201d <br>\u2013 Forest Witcraft<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, Jesus is calling us beyond what is reasonable, and to work for what is important to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I welcome any comments or questions.
