{"id":4877,"date":"2025-08-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/?p=4877"},"modified":"2025-08-12T10:20:56","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T15:20:56","slug":"sunday-homily-august-10-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2025\/08\/10\/sunday-homily-august-10-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Homily, August 10, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-38880c9\" data-block-id=\"38880c9\"><style>.stk-38880c9 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-2, #7b272c) !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-38880c9 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">Treasure in Relationships<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To All,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">In our Gospel reading for this Sunday (Luke 12:32-48), Jesus speaks to His disciples about the kingdom of heaven, and the need to be vigilant for when the Son of Man comes. He first uses the image of a master of the house being prepared for when a thief might come and break into the house. Peter then asks, \u201cLord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?\u201d And Jesus replies with another parable, contrasting the servant who is found faithful when the master arrives with the servant who says to himself, \u201cMy master is delayed in coming,\u201d and then proceeds to mistreat his fellow servants and gets drunk. The latter will be punished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I thought about the servant who only thought about what he could get away with while the master was delayed, it seemed to me that there was no real relationship between this servant and his master. It was strictly transactional. Otherwise, the servant would not have been tempted to act the way he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is our relationship with God merely transactional? Do we think only in terms of what we can get from God, or how much we can get away with? Yes, the parable calls us to be servants of God, but we are more than that. In the beginning of our Gospel reading, Jesus reassures His disciples, \u201cDo not be afraid any longer little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.\u201d We are more than God\u2019s employees; we are God\u2019s beloved. Out of love, Jesus has \u201cserved\u201d us by giving of Himself on the Cross!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus says, \u201cFor where your treasure is, there also will our heart be.\u201d Is our treasure our relationship with a loving God in Jesus Christ? And do we see our relationship with God inextricably connected to our relationship with others and with all of God\u2019s creation? Or are we content with the mistreatment of our fellow servants, our brothers and sisters? Cornel West once said, \u201cNever forget that justice is what love looks like in public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To think in terms of relationship helps me better understand the words of Jesus at the end of our Gospel reading: \u201cMuch will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.\u201d When our relationship with a loved one grows deeper and deeper, the demands of love do not become less, but become greater. At the same time, these \u201cdemands\u201d do not become so much obligations (although there are times when they can feel that way), but expressions of love. God continues to show us how far He is willing to go in love for us. We will never be able to match God\u2019s love for us, but we can be willing to grow in our love for God, in giving of ourselves in love for others and for the world, until we are in the presence of the treasure we seek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">May we grow in our relationship with God, and may love and justice abound in our world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I welcome any comments or questions.
