{"id":7241,"date":"2024-10-17T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-17T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiga5ubklx.wpdns.site\/?p=7241"},"modified":"2025-09-10T13:13:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T18:13:06","slug":"the-global-migration-crisis-what-can-a-retreat-center-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2024\/10\/17\/the-global-migration-crisis-what-can-a-retreat-center-do\/","title":{"rendered":"The Global Migration Crisis: What Can a Retreat Center Do?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized has-custom-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"908\" height=\"747\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/walking-with-crucified.png\" alt=\"Illustration of people from various walks of life surround by text that says &quot;Walking with the crucified&quot; and the Passionist sign\" class=\"has-border-color has-palette-color-22-border-color wp-image-7251\" style=\"border-width:9px;width:345px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/walking-with-crucified.png 908w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/walking-with-crucified-300x247.png 300w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/walking-with-crucified-768x632.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any community or institution, social or religious, looking at the current crisis of global human migration might be easily overwhelmed and be left feeling hopeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past year, some Passionist Retreat Center teams have stepped out of their comfort zones to try some unique local responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have all begun with the same questions and assumptions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThis seems to be overwhelming.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe have to do something.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cOur resources are limited.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSome people in our communities might be upset with us.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some of the initiatives Passionist Retreat Centers in the United States have been implementing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Retreat centers are places that offer retreats<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several communities have spent time discerning the questions, \u201cWhat can we do?\u201d and \u201cWhat do we have to give?\u201d The answer to the second question has also answered the first:&nbsp; we can plan and lead a retreat program of renewal and reflection to the people who work in the local migrant\/refugee support centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sharing resources and hope in Detroit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Detroit-Coalition.png\" alt=\"The migrant\/refugee support centers in the Greater Detroit Area that participated in a a retreat at St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat &amp; Conference Center\" class=\"wp-image-7245\" style=\"width:291px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Detroit-Coalition.png 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Detroit-Coalition-300x162.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The migrant\/refugee support centers in the Greater Detroit Area that participated in a a retreat at St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat &#038; Conference Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat &amp; Conference Center team in Detroit, MI, invited the staff from the migrant\/refugee support centers in the Greater Detroit Area to a retreat. And they came \u2013 25 strong! They enjoyed their time together and were refreshed by a morning of reflection and lunch. Given that many had never met before, the group began to network, to share needs and resources, to plan and to support each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retreat center team offered space for people to drop off donated furniture and clothing and to store it until it could be picked up and redistributed. That first encounter was such a success that it has been repeated again, and again. The retreat center is now one of this group\u2019s regular meeting places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building community support in Southern California and Texas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar initiatives are underway at Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre, CA, and Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center in Houston, TX. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holy Name has generously used one of its conference rooms to host a Day of Recollection in Spanish to raise funds for two local migrant center charity organizations. There has been an amazing response from a community that identifies itself closely with the migration reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New friendships and support networks are evolving. This assistance allows the students to experience faith and contemplation in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These engagements have inspired both good dialogue and generous responses. A planned caf\u00e9 at Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Place in North Palm Beach, FL, will extend this simple response in new ways. \u201cFood for thought\u201d is becoming \u201cfood for migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether in prayer or through preaching, the message is that the crucified Christ lives in the children, women and men who are displaced from their homes and are seeking safety and security in a new land. Their stories are the story of Jesus, Mary and Joseph fleeing to Egypt, now made visible in our own cities. Migrants and refugees are asking: \u201cAre we welcome here? Is there a place for us?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Retreat centers are places with rooms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One retreat center has taken a creative and bold approach to this challenge by providing rooms, support and training to small groups of migrants and refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The community at Thomas Berry Place in Jamaica, NY, in partnership with the RECONNECT program, is taking a novel approach. There they are given a room, a hot meal each day, a transit pass, a personalized work-training program and a daily class in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These young men are provided an opportunity to give back to the local community through service and given communal support to help them through their cultural and personal transition into this new living situation. The goal is that this opportunity be transitional for each of the men and to help them move toward something more permanent and sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recently, a small group of Muslim Afghan refugee women, sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, have been welcomed into another small wing of the retreat center. Creating a temporary home, one of the sisters is living with them and accompanying them through their transitional journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rekindling hope for the future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of all the other benefits, the opportunity to share stories and experience the support of a caring community has proven to be significant in rekindling hope for the future. One of the young women, who is a guest at the retreat center, recently commented that she never would have imagined such hospitality and welcome from Christians. It has changed her life for the better and has given her hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, this can be said for everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2
