This ethical teaching is endorsed by nearly every religion and culture. Indeed, it is a global standard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early examples include the ancient Egyptian \u201cTale of the Eloquent Peasant.\u201d Confucius also taught a version in 6th-5th century BC. The Golden Rule can also be found in Hinduism, Buddhism, and in Ancient Greece, in Judaism and in Christianity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-black-color has-palette-color-39-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Helping-Homelss-Woman.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3327 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Helping-Homelss-Woman.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Helping-Homelss-Woman-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the historical context of the Golden Rule in today\u2019s gospel of Luke, 6:27-36. \u201dDo to others as you would have them do to you,\u201d Jesus declares.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jesus doesn\u2019t stop there. Verse 31 is the pivot point where Jesus goes beyond the self- interest of the Golden Rule. Jesus teaches the true motivation for practicing the Golden Rule, which is nothing less than a radical summary of love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The love that Jesus commands in this gospel is one that loves the enemy, loves by doing good to those who hate us, blessing those who hate us, and praying for those who curse us Jesus re-interprets the Golden Rule by pushing the concern for reciprocity out of the picture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-5-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you?\u201d Jesus asks. Love and expect nothing in return.
