In the passage from 1 Timothy, we are reminded that through baptism we were incorporated into \u201cthe household of God.\u201d Even though all of us belong to multiple \u201chouseholds\u201d (family, friendships, local communities, groups and organizations), none should ever become more important than the household of God, which is \u201cthe Church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.\u201d The household of God is our true place of belonging, the foundation and center of our lives; no other \u201chousehold\u201d should ever supplant it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lest we think the household of God is a haphazard collection of individuals, each doing as he or she pleases, the writer insists that every member should \u201cknow how to behave in the household of God.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-37-background-color has-background\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Contemplation.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3262 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Contemplation.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Contemplation-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>That\u2019s because as we grow as members of that household, we are initiated into the ways of God that have been revealed to us in Christ. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By learning the \u201cmanners\u201d of Christ, we can fulfill our baptismal vocation of witnessing Christ in our lives until, as 1 Timothy promises, he is \u201cbelieved in throughout the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, today\u2019s strange nugget of a gospel shows us how not to behave; it is a pithy, if initially perplexing, lesson in \u201cbad manners.\u201d Jesus zeroes in on people who are always finding fault, always criticizing, and using that as an excuse to reject the message as well as the messenger. John the Baptist comes along, and rather than taking his message to heart, they declare, \u201cHe is possessed by a demon.\u201d Then Jesus stands right in front of them, and rather than opening their hearts to receive him, they mock him as \u201ca glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.\u201d As a result, they stay exactly as they were, untouched, unchanged, unredeemed. That\u2019s not only bad manners; it\u2019s also an inconsolable tragedy.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The household of God is our true place of belonging, the foundation and
