I really don\u2019t like getting up early, but once up, I cherish the quiet, the stillness of the morning. It is in that stillness that I believe we can come to know who we are. That stillness, that solitude is where Jesus, in today\u2019s gospel, comes to a deeper understanding of who he is and of his mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is so much noise all around us all day. A cacophony of voices all try to tell us what to think, what to do, what to believe. Even Jesus realizes that others try to define him. \u201cWho do the crowds say that I am?\u201d he asks his disciples. They said in reply, \u201cJohn the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, \u2018One of the ancient prophets has arisen.\u2019\u201d We want to make Jesus into what we want Jesus to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-5-background-color has-background\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Sunrise-Sky.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3588 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Sunrise-Sky.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Sunrise-Sky-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\">There is but one voice that Jesus listens to, often in quiet solitude. That true voice speaks to him, \u201cYou are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am equally at fault wanting to make others into my own image and likeness, wanting others to see the world as I see it. Probably like many of us, I listen too much to the voices that affirm the world as I want it to be. The political and religious rancor has become deafening and defeating, even depressing. So, I crawl out of bed earlier than I would like to sit in silence with a cup of coffee. No news. No television. In the quiet I try to filter out the noisy voices but one: You are my beloved.
