Wow!! Just focusing on today\u2019s first reading, Habakkuk just really lays it out there.&nbsp; Crying out to the Lord about the violence and destruction, he accuses the Lord of not listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pushing further, he alleges the Lord failed to intervene amidst the strife and clamorous discord.&nbsp; While reading this, my mind replays thousands of images of our world\u2019s current situation.&nbsp; Our daily news bombards our senses with images of violent destruction, people who are helpless, the injustice of humanity, which leads to more suffering, especially innocent children. Habakkuk is a prophet who lived 2500 years ago, yet still sends a chill down my spine.&nbsp; Was he writing about his time, or was he speaking about today\u2019s reality?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over six hundred years before Jesus was born, idolatry and injustice were common themes. The nation of Babylon, rising in power and military might, pressed in upon the southern kingdom of Israel, where the glory of Jerusalem was eroding.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Habakkuk\u2019s struggle is about believing God\u2019s message when there is so much evil and tragedy in the world. &nbsp;He wrestled with God around this big question, why does God allow this to happen?&nbsp; <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar spiritual struggles probably shape our life\u2019s questions today. Using a literary genre of lament, Habakkuk begins naming issue after issue, demanding that the Lord do something about the situation to alleviate suffering and injustice in the world. You can hear the frustration and plea in his words.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habakkuk\u2019s rant isn\u2019t met with silence.&nbsp; The Lord does respond.&nbsp; But if you listen carefully, the response doesn\u2019t really address Habakkuk\u2019s deep concern.&nbsp; Did the Lord\u2019s response even make sense to Habakkuk? And then he is told, \u201cWrite down the vision.\u201d &nbsp;Like all of the laments in the book of the prophet Habakkuk, he never gets the answer that he is looking for. This is a vital lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to understand that the Lord never promises to fix every situation or make everyone happy.&nbsp; Scripture gives us a consistent message.&nbsp; This message we often know in our minds but struggle to accept in our hearts: <strong>the Lord is God, and we are not.&nbsp; <\/strong>I often hear people say, \u201cGod really smiled on me,\u201d when something good happens. But that kind of thinking falls apart when things don\u2019t go as hoped. Just because life doesn\u2019t go our way doesn\u2019t mean God loves us any less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally speaking, when I forget this truth, I find myself out of balance.&nbsp; I am certain this is true for every human being.&nbsp; What brings me back into a better framework is to remind myself of the elements of God\u2019s covenant to us, beginning with the truths of our baptism, eucharist and the sacraments.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-38-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 53%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0;font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.575), 22px);\">Our baptism assures us we have a place in the kingdom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0;font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.575), 22px);\">Eucharist assures us we have a place at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0;font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.575), 22px);\">The sacraments perpetually surround us with grace.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Baptism.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3216 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Baptism.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Baptism-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These moments of grace may seem simple, but they should never be overlooked. When I truly appreciate my place within God\u2019s covenant, it becomes easier to accept that God\u2019s Will may not always align with mine.&nbsp; But that doesn\u2019t mean God\u2019s grace is absent\u2014far from it.&nbsp; Since no one can change God\u2019s will, the only thing we can do is adjust our own.
