{"id":9142,"date":"2025-11-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/?p=9142"},"modified":"2025-11-08T19:01:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T01:01:39","slug":"sunday-homily-november-9-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/passionist.org\/es\/2025\/11\/09\/sunday-homily-november-9-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Homily, November 9, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-subtitle stk-block-subtitle stk-block stk-c86d385\" data-block-id=\"c86d385\"><style>.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;color:var(--theme-palette-color-2, #7b272c) !important;line-height:1.3em !important;font-weight:normal !important;font-style:italic !important;font-family:\"ct_font_prensa\", Sans-serif !important;}@media screen and (max-width:999px){.stk-c86d385 .stk-block-subtitle__text{font-size:1.8em !important;}}<\/style><p class=\"stk-block-subtitle__text stk-subtitle has-text-color\">In God&#8217;s Church<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I must confess that when I started praying the Liturgy of the Hours, a form of prayer in the Church which marks times during the day to pause and pray, I often wondered why the Church had feast days like the one we celebrate this Sunday, November 9 \u2013 The Dedication of Saint John Lateran Church, which is located in Rome, and was built by the Emperor Constantine, in the early centuries of the Church. I suppose, rather self-righteously, I wondered why we were glorifying church buildings. After all, as we hear in our second reading from 1 Corinthians (3:9c-11, 16-17), St. Paul writes to his fellow Christians: \u201cYou are God\u2019s building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know now how places, especially particular churches, can be important to people. For me, though, what is most important is that feasts like this invite us to reflect on what it means to be church. In our Gospel reading (John 2:13-22), Jesus enters the temple area, and finds merchants selling animals for sacrifice, and moneychangers converting Roman money to money to be used in the temple. Incensed at the sight, Jesus fashions a whip out of cords and drives the merchants and the moneychangers out, saying, \u201cTake these out of here, and stop making my Father\u2019s house a marketplace.\u201d The incident called to mind for the disciples the Scripture: \u201cZeal for your house will consume me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-6-background-color has-background\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Lateran-Basilica.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3406 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Lateran-Basilica.jpg 610w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Lateran-Basilica-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-palette-color-4-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(17.905px, 1.119rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.789), 28px);\">Jesus didn\u2019t want the temple to be something it wasn\u2019t created to be &#8212; a place for commerce. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know people can complain when the pastor talks about money, but the money is for the church to continue its mission, not to make a profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these times, there are other things we need to consider that the church is not meant to be. It is not meant to be a place of condemnation. It is not meant to give in to hate and fear. It is not meant to be a community that believes in life as a zero-sum game, but rather a community that trusts in the love and generosity of God and is willing to be welcoming and generous to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, a great image of church is found in our first reading from Ezekiel (47:1-2, 8-9, 12). Unfortunately, the way the whole reading has been abridged, it seems that water is only trickling from the temple, but when you read the whole passage, you see that the stream does indeed begin as a trickle but grows into a stream that can only be crossed by swimming. And as the angel describes this stream to the prophet, it is clear that this stream is life-giving, supporting all life, and giving it abundance. And I\u2019ve thought, for some time now, what a way to imagine the Church! Instead of water flowing from the Church, what if it were the love of God in Jesus Christ? What if the love of God in Jesus Christ would flow out of us as a community of faith, bringing life and hope and healing wherever we went? We wouldn\u2019t be indulging in passing judgment or looking down on others or looking to push people out. We would be engaged in following Christ and helping lift others up. Wouldn\u2019t that be Good News?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May we be the Church God calls us to be.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I welcome any comments or questions.
