The installation of solar panels at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center in Sierra Madre, CA began in Fall 2025.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This fall, Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center broke ground on their exciting solar power project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is inspired by the Passionists’ commitment to Pope Francis’ teaching in Laudato Si'<\/a><\/em>, which encourages us to care for our planet. Pope Francis highlighted the importance of renewable energy in his encyclical, urging us to reduce carbon emissions and protect our common home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switching to solar energy is a big step for us… We aim to protect the environment and save on rising electricity costs.<\/p>\nFilippo Fanara, former chair of the Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center Board of Directors and solar project champion<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

About the Mater Dolorosa Solar Project:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  • 448 solar panels will be installed in two parking areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The project will include four electric vehicle charging stations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Batteries will store energy and provide backup during power outages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The system will produce about 187 KW of power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Retreat Center expects to save $100,000 to $110,000 each year on utility bills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The total project cost is about $1,300,000 and will be funded through federal and state incentives and donations. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The project is predicted to be done in early 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
