Jesus is entering Jericho, about twenty miles northeast of Jerusalem where he will be condemned to death, tortured, and crucified. At this point in his ministry, Jesus cannot go anywhere unnoticed, so as he makes his way through the dusty streets of Jericho, a crowd quickly gathers. Sitting on the side of the road is a blind man, begging. We can imagine he\u2019s spent many days beseeching assistance from anyone who might help him; but he knows from the noise of the crowd that this day is different, so he asks what is going on and is told, \u201cJesus of Nazareth is passing by.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens next is fascinating. Upon hearing that Jesus is about to pass right before him, the blind man bellows, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile has-palette-color-5-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(25.014px, 1.563rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 1.327), 42px);\">\u201cJesus, Son of David, have pity on me!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jesus-Heals-the-Blind-Man-sq.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9247 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jesus-Heals-the-Blind-Man-sq.jpg 400w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jesus-Heals-the-Blind-Man-sq-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jesus-Heals-the-Blind-Man-sq-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The irony is striking because the blind man\u2019s response testifies that he, who cannot see, is the one person in the story who recognizes that Jesus is not just a carpenter\u2019s son from the tiny village of Nazareth, but indeed the son of God. It\u2019s precisely because he <em>sees so clearly<\/em> who Jesus is that he will not let the crowd silence him. He knows his life depends on encountering Jesus and will not let this singular opportunity be denied him; thus, from the depths of his being, he screams out all the louder: \u201cSon of David, have pity on me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus asks him the question that we need to imagine Jesus asking us: \u201cWhat do you want me to do for you?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is no surprise that the blind man answers, \u201cLord, please let me see,\u201d and no surprise that Jesus gives him sight.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps what is surprising is that the blind man knows Jesus can do something far more important for him than restoring his sight, because the first thing he does when he can see is not to run off to celebrate with his family and friends, but to become Jesus\u2019 disciple, joyously doing what all of us are called to do: follow Jesus and give glory to God. Whenever that happens, like the blind man, our sight will be fully restored.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The irony is striking because the blind man\u2019s response testifies
