Are you and I searching for God? I am touched by an incredible story by the famed Elie Wiesel Auschwitz survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Recipient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grandson of Rabbi Baruch, Yehiel, burst into tears in his room. The Rabbi asked: <em>\u201cYehiel, Yehiel, why these tears? Why are you crying?\u201d \u201cMy friend cheated, it\u2019s not just grandpa, it\u2019s not fair for a friend to cheat!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBut what did your friend do?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe were playing hide-and-seek. I hid so well that he could not find me; so, he stopped playing, he did not look for me anymore. Do you understand, grandpa? I hid and he did not look for me. It\u2019s not fair!\u201d <\/em>Rabbi Baroukh, upset, began to caress the boy\u2019s head, and tears flowed from his eyes: <em>\u201cGod, too, Yehiel, <\/em>\u201che murmured,\u00a0<em>\u201cGod is sad too. God hides, and human beings do not seek Him. Do you understand, Yehiel? God hides and humans do not even bother to look for Him. \u201c(<\/em>Source: Translated from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elie_Wiesel\">Elie Wiesel<\/a>\u2019s book\u00a0<em>C\u00e9l\u00e9bration hassidique<\/em>\u00a0(1978), which was later published in English as\u00a0<em><strong>Somewhere a Master<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(1998).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding the above narrative calls firstly for addressing one of the foundations of Hasidic philosophy. The central pillar of Hasidic doctrine can be summed up in the brief adage,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no place absent of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s presence pervades all existence. (Arthur Green, Hasidism without Supernaturalism, Tikkun, May 27, 2022) In our first-grade catechism, I was taught that God is everywhere.\u00a0 We were taught that God\u2019s presence pervades all existence. Hence, it is possible to uncover such a presence in everything human and all creation possesses the incandescence of God\u2019s presence. Yes, God is hiding where most of us would never think to look, within our very selves.
